Really really fun with friends. I got my Age of Empires friend group to try it out, and after the first game we were hooked. Online multiplayer is nothing special, and you need at least 6 friends all on voice chat to have a good game, but if you can get a group going, the time will fly.

still my favorite game of all time but Valve have completely abandoned it.
