Do I recommend this game?

I got shot 19 times ,died and then a demon ripped my head off after i died.

Spec ops the line is a very generic and average cover shooter, but the story had a point and made it pretty well.

On paper there is no reason why I should like this game as much as I do. It does not have the same amount of open endedness role playing of New Vegas. It does not have the same depressing beauty or immersion of 3. The world is just not as hostile or creepy and the quality of writing shown in the main quest is just not up to the previous games, not to mention the dialogue system is pretty awful in all regards. NONE of that changes the fact that I poured over 800 hours into this game and regret none of it.

The combat is awesome, with the weapon, armour and settlement customisation rewarding you for your scavenging and collection. The details poured into each environment add a real sense of realism to many of the settlements, and I'm still discovering new details to this day. I think Bethesda took a massive risk with this game, aiming for a more playable, cinematic and exciting experience rather than a straight up RPG. I'd describe 4 as action shooter with RPG elements, whilst 3/NV as RPG games with action elements, which is the major difference that sets them apart. The takeaway is that I love playing this game, even if I don't love the character customisation of it. My only complaint with the combat is enemies turning into bullet sponges the higher and higher levels you get, which can turn the combat into a slog, although enough variety is shown in enemies, and the AI - surprisingly dynamic for a Beth game- keeps encounters fresh. Some supporting companions are fantastically written and I felt a real sense of connection with them throughout our journeys together. It's such a shame that the same level of care wasn't poured into the main quest-line, or dialogue.

Ultimately, the love that I had for this game when I first played it, as a fresh faced 14 year old, has faded over time as I sunk hours into 3/NV, but I still adore the core systems that Beth created here. I can only hope that with Fallout 5, the insane work put into the gameplay will be readjusted and put into the RPG sutff. Hopefully Starfield is an indicator of the step in that direction.
