Akira Maeda

Era - 1980s / 1990s - NJPW / UWF / RINGS

Known as one of the more difficult men to work with in wrestling history, Akira Maeda brought legit striking and grappling skills into the ring, and occasionally used them to ill effect. A shocking face breaking kick on an unsuspecting Riki Choshu eventually lead to Maeda's departure from NJPW.

Upon leaving, Maeda formed several shoot style wrestling organizations, the reformed UWF, and Fighting Network RINGS, the latter of which would evolve into a full on MMA promotion, and would feature the early careers of Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria.
