Introduction
Uploading a mod isn't difficult. Simply put: create your folder, copy your modifed datas, start the game and upload :D
I hope this guide is easy to understand and you have no problems. If you have some questions you can write a comment below or sent me a friend request. See ya :D
Locate the game data
Look at these pictures to find out where your game datas are:

Create your mod-folder
Search the "mods"-folder in the directory. If you don't have this folder then create it like in the picture below:

Go into the mods-folder and create your own directory for your mod.

In your modfolder you need three things:
(1) The directory to the file which you added/ edited e.g.
"[...]\Age2HD\resources\_common\dat\empires2_x2_p1" (for Data-Mods) *

(2) A Picture (JPG- or JPEG-file) which can be seen in the workshop when you upload your mod. **

(3) A text document (TXT-file) with some release information. ***

The names of the folders and the document have to be exactly the same as in the picture below. If not, nothing will work. ****

Upload your mod
Start your game.

This picture shows you if your mod was accepted by the game or not.

Now enter the Mod Manager of AoE by clicking on Steam Workshop in the main menu:

Here you can see all mods which are installed (subcribed and local/own mods)
Now select you mod and click on "Publish Mod".

This is the preparation befor you finally upload your mod:

Steps:
I - These are some information about the mod (title etc.) *****
II - Din't be confused. This is just a display error. (ignore it :D)
III - This text from the text document. By clicking in this field you can edit this but it's not changed in the document. But only temporarily.
IV - In principle, it doesn't matter what stands there because Steam categorizes the mod automatically

AND NOW YOU CAN CLICK ON "PUBLISH MOD" :D :D :D

===> Mod has been uploaded ===> mission accomplished
Important things
* If you upload a new map or you changed other things then the names of the folders are not the same as in the pictures.

** There is no right resolution. Just choose one which don't is 50x50 :D.

*** Later if you want to upload your mod you'll see a preview of you text document ingame and ho it looks like in the workshop. If you don't like it you have the possibility to change the text ingame.

**** The names of the picture or text document etc. have to be the same as in the picture (or as the original-file you have edited). But the directory could be different!!!

***** You can change the title, the describtion and the photo later on your workshop-site.

I am getting an error 25 (image too large) when I upload a mod. I never got this before. Even the steam logo gets the error. Just to check it, I tried to update an existing mod and it won't update either. It doesn't go past this error. Please help?

Hey
That's an interesting thing. You can choose between DLC and non DLC civs using another data set.

If you want to disable only certain individual civilizations, then you would need a modiication for it, I think. And even that's an ugly solution as far as the graphical interface is concerned. The developers unfortunately provide a bad "programmability" available

Well actually, now that you mention it... I haven't been able to figure out how to disable some civs... Do you know how to do that? :)

@Blattman, good to hear... if you have anything else to ask don't let me wait :)

have fun

Nevermind! Got it working by removing the first "Age2HD"-folder I made :D

Hi! Thanks for a great guide!
I'm just lost on one point - the directory.

I've put my modded game data file (empires2_x1_p1.dat) in a folder I named "dat". And then I put the "dat"-folder in a folder I named "_common" etc. until I got to the "Age2HD"-folder. Then I put that "Age2HD"-folder that I made in my mod folder "Ultimate Siege Mod" and then I put that folder in the "mods"-folder in the big "Age2HD"-folder with all the game stuff in it. Could you write a full directory?

When I start the game the text in the validation is white, not green, and nothing has changed. Is it supposed to be green?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hello Krypton, I have a question for you about updating mods:

With patch 5.8 in beta, do you have any advice for how to update your mod with the latest official patch? I am hoping that Steam would support the feature of "merging in new master changes" like a github repository, but I worry that when patch 5.8 goes live, I will have to completely remake my mod.

Please let me know if there is a way to merge in those kind of changes, I am completely open to using an IDE or other editor of some kind (where I could "diff" the two datasets). In fact, I would honestly prefer using an IDE, but have had to use AGE 3 editor to make my changes.

Thanks Krypton!

If you have a graphics mod, other players don't need this. If you want to play a Data-Mod, yes everyone need this mod in same version. The host activate this mod in the lobby.

so does eeryone need to install the mods or just the host and then players download it when they join?
