Long story short, your map was shit.

Ehhhh... Not that good of a map, sorry. You can't simply have a door that leads into an abyss. And adding some of the prisoners within the cells is not a good technique. Forcing the player to reach in and stab some sap with, say, a baton isn't really... good. (Don't know how else to put it.)
