Section 1: Introduction

Q) What should I know about this game?

A) Clarent Saga: Tactics is a new game for Windows. It begins a new story, set on a fictional Continent of Valeria, it is inspired by classic 16 bits TRPGs for the gameplay/scenario. It is a reimagining of my previous game The Peloran Wars.

Q) Is this game available in English?

A) Yes, it is.

Q) Are Marth or Roy in this game?

A) I would like to but they are not in my game.

Q) Can I make my own character in this game?

A) No, I think the hero is not the same as the player.

Q) Do characters still permanently die in battle?

A) No, if you play in the easier difficulties. Yes if you play above the normal difficulty. I recommend playing in the normal difficulty.

Q) What is the class-change system like?

A) Your character must reach a certain Level, no special class change item is required and there is no drawback so promote your units as soon as you can! When promoting characters, players can sometimes choose one of two higher vocation for them to upgrade into. Which vocation you pick only has a minimal effect on character stats, as character growth is unchanged. However picking a particular vocation over another may award more movement, different weapon and ability type. You can freely promote or swap vocations in the arrange section of the preparation menu.

Q) Are there support conversations in this game (and proper ones too)?

A) Yes! Each chapter has at least one support conversations, however there is no bonus in doing so. It's completely optional and there to flesh out characters.

Q) Are there multiplayer battles in this game?

A) No, it's a single player game.

Q) If a character dies in the tutorial, will they return in Abel’s story?

A) Regardless of the difficulty, Ami and Pascal will return in Abel's story. Though if Abel dies it is still a gameover.

Q) Wait! Thieves can’t steal item?

A) Yes, but only one character can, and it has a lot of restriction (see Calculations section).

Q) So there are no forges and weapons don't break?

A) Yes, exactly. I really think unbreakable weapons are much better. There are also magic shops starting from chapter 12.

Q) So there is a rescue mechanic?

A) Exactly, you can beat the game without it but it gives more freedom to the player, which is always good.

Q) Is there a weapon triangle mechanic?

A) Yes, see the calculations section for more details.

Q) Can I swap difficulty when I want?

A) Yes, but when you swap difficulty in the preparation screen, the map will be reset.

Q) Is there exploration map?

A) Yes, there are a few ones.

Section 2: Early/Mid-game

Q) Wait a second, how do I choose my main character’s class at the very beginning?

A) You can’t. All character have a predetermined class and abilities.

Q) How do you promote Ami, Athena and Pascal?

A) I really recommend to share the bonus exp and promote all your characters! Pascal is really an awesome mage and Ami is a vital unit for healing. Athena may be the least useful but you won't regret training her.

Q) Is there a limit to how many times you can change class?

A) No, you can freely swap in the preparation menu.

Q) When do your main character promote?

A) At any time using the command advance in the preparation menu or using a special item.

Q) Who can use Shade magic?

A) The only playable characters who can use shade magic are Ishkur and Sin. Shade spells are great but they are heavy so be careful when using them!

Q) Do certain Abilities only work when you’re in a particular vocation or require a certain weapon type equipped?

A) Yes, all classes have innate abilities. Weapons can also give some abilities, for example the Mjölnir gives the wall ability and the Art.Bow gives the re-act ability. Characters have also personal abilities as well.

Q) Is there a limit to how many Abilities a character can learn?

A) Yes, the abilities are pretty much determined, the maximum of personal abilities is 3.

Section 3: End-game

Q) Is there a generation system?

A) Yes, you can choose two couples that will determine two characters in the last part.

Q) Are they multiple Endings and a branching storyline?

A) No. But there once was.

Q) Is there a post-game or new game plus?

A) Yes, there is two bonus map where you will fight your main characters!

Q) Last thing I should know before playing?

A) There are some hidden option: go to the game folder, open the game.ini with Notepad (or any other text editor) and change it to suit your playstyle. You can change keybinding, hard or soft rendering, etc.

Game Controls: There are three supported control schemes.

By default the Game pad works with DirectInput.
To change Game pad to XInput, go to the game folder,
open the game.ini with Notepad and change this line:

Dodge = (Agility x 1.5) + Luck / 2 + Support bonus + Terrain bonus + Ability bonus + Weapon Triangle Bonus
Battle precision = Precision – enemy’s Dodge
The absorb, pierce, pulverize abilities only activate on successful hit.
Wand precision = 100 if user's INT > target's MND, 0 otherwise (if using simple formula)
Wand precision = 30 + [{(Intelligence) - (Target's mind)} × 5] + (Dexterity) - (distance from target × 2) (if using complex formula)

Range for long range wands

7 (if using fixed formula)
INT/3, min 4 and max 10 (if using variable formula)

Weapon Triangle

Weapon triangle bonus: +1 DMG dealt, -1 DMG received, +10 dodge and precision

Physical weapon triangle: Swords > Axes > Lances > Swords
Magical weapon triangle A (Nature): Fire > Wind > Thunder\Ice > Fire
Magical weapon triangle B: Nature > Holy > Shade > Nature

(“>” means “is strong against”)

Comment 1: Magic sword/axe count both as sword/axe and magic.
This mean that a holy sword will have against a shade axe a double bonus:
+2 DMG dealt, -2 DMG received, +20 dodge and precision
Another example: a wind sword will have no bonus against a shade axe.

Comment 2: you can chose between five option for the weapon triangle.
Normal, same as above
Without, no weapon triangle
Reverse, reverse the weapon triangle
Double, double the weapon triangle bonuses
Reverse Double, reverse and double the weapon triangle bonuses

Critical

Critical rate = Dexterity / 2 + Critical bonus + Fury bonus + Commander ability bonus
Battle critical rate = Critical rate – enemy’s Luck

Rescue

Rescue if: Build > other unit’s Build

A note on "true hit":
Instead of using 1 RNG, the game used (by default) the average of 2 RNG for the probability to hit then rounded. The game display the "true hit" which is exactly the probability to hit. You can switch to 1 RNG or Hybrid RNG. (see Mathematical appendix for more details.)

Child's growth rates and starting stat

Let's call A the stat/growth rate of the same gender parent.
Let's call B the stat/growth rate of the other gender parent.
Then the stat/growth rate of the child is (generally) Max(A, mean(A,B) )
Child inherit the personal abilities of their parents

Experience

When enemy’s Level >= Level
then coeff A = 1 and coeff B = 3
Otherwise coeff A = coeff B = 2

Experience from doing no damage = 4 + (enemy’s Level – Level) x coeff A
Experience from doing damage = 8 + (enemy’s Level – Level) x coeff A
Experience from defeating enemy = Base + Bonus + (enemy’s Level – Level) x coeff B

Base = 24 in Walk Easy Normal Normal+ Hard difficulties
Base = 20 in Hard+ Very Hard difficulties
Base = 16 in Challenge difficulty

Bonus = 0 when defeating a common enemy
Bonus = 8 when defeating a sub-leader enemy
Base = 16 when defeating a leader enemy

About PreStrike ability and reverse mode:
Only one of the unit in battle has the PreStrike or (Ex) version, if active, this unit will always strike first.
If both unit have Prestrike active, they will negate each other (ie. the unit will act normally).
In reverse mode, enemies will always strike first unless your character have the PreStrike ability active, in this case they will negate each other (ie. the unit will act normally).

About the Steal ability:
Stealing has a lot of restriction. Lilith is the only one who can steal.
She can steal if: 1) her Agi > enemy's Agi and
2) her Int > enemy's Int
You cannot steal currently equipped weapons or
accessories. Finally, Lilith can steal a weapon if:
her Bld * 2 + 3 > enemy's weapon weight
You can only steal one item or weapon at a time,
and you cannot give item or weapon to an enemy
either.

About hit rate

The hit rate calculated with the formula isn't the one displayed ingame.
By default, the game uses the average of 2 RNGs value for the probability to hit then rounded the result.

Formula: let's call h the hit rate and m the miss rate after calculation.
Then m=100-h.
if (h<50) then true hit rate=Round[h*(2h+1)]
if (h=50) then true hit rate=50
if (h>50) then true hit rate=Round[100-m*(2m-1)/100]

Example 1:
After calculation, the hit rate is 60. Then the true hit rate will be 68, this value will be displayed in game. The game will still use 1 RNG, but it's a good approximation of the use of the average of 2 RNGs.

Example 2:
After calculation, the hit rate is 60. The true hit rate will be 68. Now the targeted unit goes on a mountain with 15 dodge bonus. After calculation, the hit rate is now 45. The true hit rate will be 41.
This example is a little extreme but the unit has gained a bonus of 68-41=27 to dodge!

The hybrid RNG value for the probability to hit is given by:

Formula: let's call h the hit rate
if (h<50) then no change (the same as 1 RNG)
if (h>=50) then true hit rate=Round( h + (4 / 30) * h * sin( (0.02 * h - 1) * pi) ) [if sin is in rad]
true hit rate=Round( h + (4 / 30) * h * sin( (0.02 * h - 1) * 180) ) [if sin is in deg]


About growth rate

Let's say the unit has gained 6 levels and let's call X the number of points gained in a statistic with 60 growth rate. Then X follows the binomial distribution with n=6 and p=0.6 ie X~B(6;0.6) We can easily compute all probability mass function (results are rounded).
P(X=0)=0
P(X=1)=0.04
P(X=2)=0.14
P(X=3)=0.28
P(X=4)=0.31
P(X=5)=0.19
P(X=6)=0.05

The probability are additive since all the events are independent, for example:
P(X≤2)=0.18
P(3≤X≤4)=0.59

We can also calculate some statistics like the expected value, the variance and standard deviation:
E(X)=3.6
V(X)=1.44
σ(X)=1.2

In summary: the unit can expect to gain around 3.6±1.2 points in that statistic.
You can extend the reasoning with different value of the parameters n and p.

When a growth rate is greater than 100, you will automatically gain 1 point or more in this stat.

Let's say the unit has gained 6 levels and let's call X the number of points gained in a statistic with 160 growth rate. Then X doesn't follow a binomial distribution but Y = X - n does follow a binomial distribution with n=6 and p=0.6 ie Y~B(6;0.6) just like above.

From this we can also easily calculate the probability to cap a stat. Let's take Abel for example, he has gained 20 levels and let's call X the number of points gained in one of his statistic with 60 growth rate. Then X follows the binomial distribution with n=20 and p=0.6 ie X~B(20;0.6)
To cap his FOR stat he needs to gain 12 points in that statistic. So the probability to cap this stat is
P(X>=12)=0.6

To save just press Enter on a empty tile (no units on there) and there is the save option.
You can only save on the map before all your units have moved each turn.

F3 doesn't save, it just close the game.

Having weapons break really is a pain as a mechanic, glad this game doesn't have it
