There is really no way this can happen, but just in case I added the penny icon to the apple mod :D

trading post was not disabled but apple trees DS was on

Are you sure you have the Trading post mod enabled? You will see that if you only have the apple tree mod enabled. And there should be no way to get pennies, unless you got them from before you disabled the trading post mod
