Yeah, tau jumping is something you kinda need to know for Multiplayer, Because You can't Rocket Jump and the Shotgun has no kick-back, So if you couldn't figure out how to do-it, You're Dead if you play Death-Mach, good thing it's just shooting at the ground to-go up and-then shoot what-ever way you want to go! guessing you're using ALT FIRE

In singleplayer this does not work for some reason, but it does in multiplayer.

I know that this is a good way to navigate... even bots find it good! X-Factor bots use it too :D
