Understanding The Nightmare
By silent hill 2 = homework
As a not-Freddy main, I find other killers to be way more easy to level up with, but Freddy is a nice relaxation from having to try to win. This fun then became my obsession, and I may or may not have become a pro Freddy. (Guide heavily inspired by Juryo’s In-Depth Doctor Guide)

Things To Keep In Mind
There are two types of survivors that you will face as The Nightmare.

  • Headstrong toxic players that aren’t afraid of any killer and will severely underestimate you (Rank 8 - 1 mostly)
  • Survivors that believe Freddy is the bane of their existence (Prob. Rank 20 - 14)

You can use this behavior against them, as their hate for you will make them play bad, or their underestimates will make them an easy target, or not, hence my suggestion of Unrelenting later.

Why The Nightmare seems unfair ingame versus statistically

The Nightmare is one of the shortest killers right next to Hag, making you more terrifying in tall loop areas as they wont see you. Using Beast of Prey is usually not such a good idea as it only activates when bloodlust activates, but it can make you a damn terrifying S.O.B.

Because you are as small, if not, smaller than the Hag, but move as fast as the Trapper and lunge closely the same as the Trapper, you will seem extremely fast and your lunge will seem ridiculously long. You might get flamed for this, but it is Freddy's short model that makes these things seem unfair.

Extra tips

Never use Hex perks as Nightmare. You will never be able to defend them.

You might get flamed for using Nightmare as many people despise him, so just remember that it's just a game for fun and they're taking getting sacrificed by a Freddy Krueger remake too seriously. (Even though the remake is actually good :D)

It’s okay to leave someone in a chase. You will be able to see their aura once they are out of your terror radius, you will not be able to see their aura once they are awake.

DO NOT try to sleep someone when their head is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, highlighted in blue aura, Freddy pulled his hand in with the souls of the children, or when they are on a hook. I've seen this happen too often from my friends and would just like to point that out for newer players not familiar with The Nightmare.

I know what I’m talking about when I suggest whatever for this killer.

Facts
  • Without addons, it takes seven seconds to sleep someone. Use this knowledge when looking at the addons below.

  • As of the Freddy changes update nearly a week after his release, survivor's have a ring around their status icon to indicate that they are asleep.

  • Survivors are highlighted in a thin light blue aura when they are in the Dream World.

  • When out of your terror radius, survivors in the Dream World will appear as red auras to you. Inside your terror radius, they will have no auras at all. It's a built in Whispers perk, use it wisely. NOTE: This only happens when they are in the dream state.

  • Unrelenting only works on missed attacks. If you tend to miss a lot, use it. If you are rank 15 - 1, don't use it and learn to time your attacks. (even I make this mistake sometimes, but Unrelenting on Freddy is scary)
The Nightmare’s Power “Dream Demon”
Dream Demon
Originally posted by Entity:
Death won't accept him and thus he remains, a calamity, indisputable master of his victims' nightmares. Dream Demon allows The Nightmare to pull Survivors into the Dream World.

  • Survivors who are awake do not see or hear The Nightmare.
  • Once targeted by The Nightmare power, Survivors enter the Dream Transition after some time.
  • During the Dream Transition they can see The Nightmare intermittently.
  • When the Dream Transition lapse, the Survivor is pulled into the Dream World.

Once in the Dream World:

  • Survivors' Auras are revealed to The Nightmare when they are outside of his terror radius.
  • Survivors suffer an action speed penalty
  • To exit the Dream World, Survivors can find other non-sleeping Survivors to perform a wake up action
  • Some failed actions can wake up the Survivor.
  • Failing a sabotage skill check will not wake you up
  • Getting hooked wakes up the Survivor

Summary

Basically, you hold M2 when near a survivor until you see their soul get sucked into your left hand and hear Freddy’s low, croaky laugh. After seven seconds with no addons, they will be highlighted in a thin blue aura that you will only be able to see when they are in line of sight. When they are not in line of sight, out of your terror radius, and sleeping, you will see a red aura that is mostly map-wide.

Strategy

Best thing to do is if you spot multiple survivors in an area, sleep as many in that area as you can within three seconds, and chase the last survivor. This buys time for you to make sure they are wasting time trying to wake each other up instead of doing gens when you start the chase on the first survivor.

This playstyle has gotten me many 3k’s and a couple 4k’s thanks to Blood Warden

  • Class Photo + “Z” Block (B+ rank addons)
  • Red Paint Brush + Class Photo (S rank addons, always use if available)

  • Blue Dress + Swing Chains
  • Prototype Claws + Nancy's Masterpiece

Best Perk Builds
The best set of perks for serious play

  • Iron Grasp - Fire Up - Blood Warden - Unrelenting (Playing casually) B+
  • Agitation - Brutal Strength - Enduring - Unrelenting (Missing/pallets are nothing) B-
  • Iron Grasp - Dying Light - BBQ+Chili - Knock Out (Achieving 4k b4 all gens are done) C
  • Agitation - Fire Up - Remember Me - Dying Light (Aim to kill obsession in 3 hooks) B+
  • BBQ+Chili - Nurses - Blood Warden - Enduring (Extremely aggressive play) A-
  • BBQ+Chili - Nurses - M&A - Shadowborn (Finding survivors wont be an issue) A
  • BBQ+Chili - Nurses - Agitation - Whispers (Less effective than above, still works) A

Risky, but worth it if it works

  • Devour Hope - TOTH - BBQ+Chili - Blood Warden (Protect Devour Hope)
  • Ruin - Nurses - BBQ+Chili - M&A (Don't protect Ruin, use it as bait to get sleeps and kills)

Don't camp with the DH build, it defeats the purpose of it.
Camp the Ruin if you know they are coming to it. Patrol gens near Ruin until they get it.
Protect Devour Hope at all costs, it is really helpful in the late game.

You CAN come up with your own build, but make sure you see the reoccurring theme here: Unrelenting, Agitation/Iron Grasp, Dying Light/Remember Me (If you plan on having obsessions), BBQ, Nurses and Blood Warden. These perks appear the most and are the most helpful, with the obsession perks being the least helpful. People will tell you Blood Warden is not that great and is a wasted perk spot, but as Freddy you will see that BW will get you an extra sacrifice in, or just points. Anything that helps you see survivor's aura's when they're not in the dream state are extremely helpfull, too.

That being said, you do not necessarily have to run these perks to win as Freddy, they just make it easier in my opinion. Although you want Freddy's terror radius as small as possible, don't waste perk slots on just doing that. Agitation is better than Iron Grasp, but it makes your terror radius bigger when using it. Be aware of these things when making your own perk set.

Feel free to post your build in the comments!

The "You forgot the power glove!" build

Hex: Devour Hope - Hex: NOED - Hex: Thrill of the Hunt - Remember Me

Devour Hope being the NES Controller, and NOED being the Power Glove.

Please do not actually use this as you will have 0 useful perks. You will recognize this if you have seen NOES: Freddy's Dead.

I hope your opinion on this killer is changed, and now you are educated in how he is actually useful and doesn't deserve buffs/nerfs of any kind. Feel free to let me know how your Freddy Experience™ was after reading this and following through on it.

Just prestiged my Freddy to P2 and I have to say K.O , Dying Light, Remember Me, and Nurse's is the best build. Don't have to worry about the Generators, just tunnel down the obsession juggle the gunho survivors and once the obsession dies the game is virtually over for them. Chances are they'll have the gates activated or 1 generator away from it, and there's probably 2 people left. You just dream world both of them and knock one down then hunt down the other. This build is by far better than any other build I've played with on Freddy, it's very punishing and very rewarding. The only problems I face when dealing with this build is if I can't find the obsession or the map is too small or litered with pallets. Sides' that you should get 4k nearly every game.

Oh and how do you join a game

Hey i just got the game and was wondering why you start at level 20. Seems like such a high rank to start you off at.

I'd make a note saying that unrelenting reduces the effects of auto aim since it is possible to auto aim onto an awake survivor protecting a sleeping survivor.

i played against a freddy once, everyone was alive and i got hooked at the end but i got rescued, then the freddy got so salty, he had to use lag switching at the end of the game and then he lunged at me and completely missed while lag switching, it was so funny.
