Fixing a broken weapon slot and gaining your items back
By Starschulz
If you have been messing with the modding support, chances are when the beta updated recently with changes to the backpack system, your saves with modding data were moved to the non modding beta. you may have lost all of your items, and likely on a 100% save you cannot get some of those back, since things like the grappling hook can only be obtained once. Your umbrella may also be gone, and replaying the first mission to re-obtain your umbrella doesnt fix it. This guide will show you how to fix these things.

Backup your save files
when doing this, it would be best to backup your files before making permanent changes. They are located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\HatinTime\HatinTimeGame\SaveData

Just copy everything in the folder, and paste it somewhere you consider safe.
SAVE FILES BROKEN BY THE OFFICIAL MODDING UPDATE
if your save file has been broken by the modding beta, coming out of beta ( 3/13/18 ) fear not! i have just the fix for you!

navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\HatinTime\HatinTimeGame\SaveData
and move anything that says slot1.hat etc out of the save files - you will be left with slotX modding beta files.

re-name them "Slot1.hat" "Slot2.hat" etc etc,

If it warns you about the file extension etc and says it might not be supported, hit ok.

Boot your game up, and it *SHOULD* be working, and you shouldn't need any of the rest of the guide. good luck!

Additional bit of info: Currently the game will re-create you a modding beta save file on save file load and not use it, but the editor will. if you try to edit your save file using the editor then you will need to rename it slotX.hat again.

The rest of the guide is an old method that no longer works as of the most recent update.
LEGACY SAVE FILE RECOVERY BEYOND THIS POINT
Getting the modding tools
If you dont have them downloaded yet, they will be needed to make the changes to your save file.

They are found in the tools section of steam - you click once on library, on the dropdown menu it will show "tools" - click on that and find them there.
Starting the Editor
What you are going to need to do now, is open the tools, and launch the editor.

Once the editor has launched, an error about missing files, NULL errors etc will pop up. may look something like this:

The error can be ignored, simply press "OK" and continue on.

Now, if your editor has crashed just as you got here or before, you will need to verify the files of the tools, and possibly even the game's files too.

Found by right clicking on the game/tools in the library, click on properties, go to the "Local Files" tab and click "Verify integrity of..." When done, the editor should show a file as being missing and it will re-download it. you should then be good to re-start the tools, launch the editor and be ready for the next step.

Getting your badges and hats back.
If you are trying to fix a save file already in the modding support beta, Theres a mod made by another modder that makes this part, very easy:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1224300346

At the time of writing this, the only things it wont add back are things from the rift roulette, badge pins, and it wont fix your broken weapon slot. Thankfully tokens and pons can be gained from modded levels so theres not too much worry there. The method using the editor, wont get you roulette items back either.

BUT - if your save file is *NOT* in the modding support beta, or that mod didn't work for you - this section will show you how to get your stuff back.

Start by first, opening a new level with either the cave, water, or "gameplay 1" templates.

If this is your first time opening the editor, you may only have the "blank map" in this list. in that case, close the editor and tools, then restart them and the templates will be there.

Once open, find the "A hat in time" dropdown menu and hover over unlockables, then click "Unlock all items"

Now, the editor temporarily has given you everything, but you haven't saved yet. Find your way to the button to test the map, which looks like a green play arrow

With the map now loaded, you want to pause using "P" on the keyboard, since "ESC" will close the window. from the pause menu, you should see all of your stuff back! Now, select "back to hub" and choose "YES!" when prompted to save and return to the hub.

When the game freezes on this screen, your items are successfully saved back to your file.

Fixing your weapon slot
Like you did before, find the "A hat in time" dropdown menu, and go to "unlockables" and then "weapons"

Many things are checked here, Uncheck them all. when you uncheck one thing, it will freeze for a second and close the menu for it. re-open it each time and make sure everything in the weapons tab is unchecked.

Now, playtest whichever template you chose and pause, then save and exit to hub. By doing this, you have cleared the weapon slot of what was in the way, and are nearly done. exit the now frozen loading screen with the escape key, and go back to the A hat in time > Unlockables > Weapons tab you were just in. Check only the umbrella, and for a final time playtest the level, save and exit to hub and use escape when the loading screen freezes.

You are done! If all went well, you can close the editor now, ( dont worry about saving anything it asks you to ) open up the game and your save file should reflect these changes.
Getting NPCs back to your spaceship
You may notice that some NPCs are no longer present in your spaceship when you open your savefile. we have solutions to a few of them so far:

Wowls ( Owl band that handles remixes )

If these guys arent around, go and grab a remix from the roulette wheel and playthrough train rush again. they will return after you finish train rush again.

Cooking Cat

In mafia town, find the bottom half of the burger. even if you have already collected it, it should be there anyway. complete the level by grabbing the timepiece and cooking cat should be back to normal.

Non modding beta Save Files
This method will work on modding support beta save files, but should also work on non modding beta files. To do this, Opt out of the modding beta and load up your save file. after loading your save file, do something to make it save - pickup a pon, grab a yarn etc, then save and quit to desktop and load the Editor again. If you playtest one of the templates and hat kid is the same as the hat kid in the non modded file, your changes will affect that file, instead of the other.
Other Details
- If you load up your save file after doing this and your backpack slot is just empty, you need to pickup something that goes in that slot like a rift token, badge slot etc. In a new save file you wont even have a backpack until you pick something up, so the same goes here.

- If hat kid's colors are off for some reason, like she has a green face you can try disabling any costume/cosmetic mods you currently have enabled. having multiple costumes trying to change things at the same time might cause some kind of unforseen conflict.
Additional Support
If something is confusing, hasn't been worded well or it just isnt working, Leave a comment! or, contact me on the hat in time discord. I have the same name as steam "Starschulz / Cypher" and i am active there frequently and would be glad to assist.

Thank you for reading, i hope this has helped you.

yeah, to fix it you would need to remove the mod first then go into the editor and remove everything, even the unarmed and go do the first level again [ I think ]

Well, to be fair, I kind of went and got a mod that changed the umbrella, that "fixed" it for me (I say fixed in quotations because, it functions like the umbrella, but removing it removes the umbrella as well), so I'm fine with that.

it didnt manage to fix your umbrella? hmm. can you remove all umbrella related things then to back and do welcome to mafia town again?
Titan 27 Jan, 2018 @ 1:20pm
Yeah I went through everything here, I got all my badges back, but not the umbrella.
