Speedrunning 'Brooklyn Bank' (Botless; Any Difficulty Solo)

Brooklyn Bank, a good map, good payment, and well designed, but how fast can you complete it?

Introduction
In a non-speedrun gameplay, the Brooklyn Bank is a pretty straight forward heist with just a couple of objectives to be completed that could be completed in less than 10 minutes with a crew on point at every objective, not counting securing the loot on the escape.

Unfortunately, there are a handful of decisions from the RNG (Random Number Generator) that could slow you down dramatically if you wish to get a decent time.
So, if you don't want to be constantly restarting your game because of the game messing around with you, this heist might not be the best thing for you to try to speedrun.

Also, because of Brooklyn Bank being a new map, guess what?

That's right!
There are no speedruns registered for this category of run registered on the official Speedrun website[www.speedrun.com].

Just don't forget to follow the submission instructions and rules, or else it will be denied, no matter how good it was.

Official Payday 2 Speedrun Submission Rules:
  • - Friendly AI is allowed.
  • - Runs must be one segment.
  • - Runs must be played vanilla (no mods). The whole HUD has to be visible.
  • - IGT is counted through the days (incl. escapes).
  • - Show the crew stats at the end in your video.
  • - Submit ONLY your IGT not Real Time.
  • - If your run is botless, submit BOTH in Any% and Botless subcategories.
  • - Heists can't be played with mutators or in Crime Spree.

This is kinda why I want to help, so this heist can have a little more activity and who knows, maybe some players might want to stick around and try to speedrun other heists.
So what do you say? What do you say we get going on the instructions, yeah?
Recommended Skills and Perk Deck
This build was created to be specialized for the categories of Botless and Any Difficulty Solo (Normal).

The effectivity of these skills on higher difficulties hasn't been tested.

Test at your own risk.

This is all a recommendation.
You are more than free to customize it or create your own from scratch, but this is just an opinion of what I find the most useful items to use on this run.

Mastermind Skills
Description
Medic
It's a solo run on the easiest difficulty of the game. You should be able to finish before you lose more than 50% of your health.
Controller
You will eventually lose some HP, but with these skills you will get back 4.5% HP every couple of seconds, and that should keep you going in the fight.
Also, having a converted unit will prove 10% speed boost. You can't be wasting time converting enemies every time that they die, so that's why you must ace Joker and Partners in Crime
to keep them alive longer. Aced Confident also helps so if one goes down, one is still up and can convert a second cop later on.
Sharpshooter
You are not required to be a killing machine. A dodge build can easily solve the cop assault problem.

Enforcer Skills
Description
Shotgunner
*Quote the Sharpshooter description*
Tank
Aced Resilience just so if you get a flashbang on the face, you don't have to waste so much time hiding in a corner until it clears out.
An aced Transporter will definitively help with moving the bags for the winch.
Shock and Awe might help a bit to reduce the time it takes to regenerate your suit's AP (Armor points), just to sightly increase your chances to survive... on the easiest difficulty...
Die Hard and its glorious 50% DMG resistance when interacting. Definitively a must have to not get downed while in the middle of something important.
Ammo Specialist
Nothing of this is required, for the exception of the Portable Saw skill. It will save you about 20 seconds of picklocking the medallion's safety box

Technician Skills
Description
Engineer
One could argue that a sentry could protect the winch, but you only have 120 skill points, and so you must use them wisely applying the correct strategies.
If your winch is constantly getting stopped by the cops, you are doing something wrong.
Breacher
On the objective No.2, you are required to saw open a door, and the saw timer DOES get reduced using the Drill Sawgeant skill. Ace it.
Getting ace status on all of the deployable charges are critical for the defense of yourself and most importantly, keep the winch running if a cop manages to get close.
Oppressor
Optional skills. Feel free to use those 3 skill points for something else if you want.

Ghost Skills
Description
Shinobi
Stealth is not an option.
Artful Dodger
Dodge as high as possible by skill points, yeah.
Aced Sneaky Bast*rd because of the saw killing the low concealment rate, thus making dodging almost impossible to do properly.
Silent Killer
Definitively have Second Wind skilled. It costs just ONE skill point and will give you a whopping 30% speed boost while your armor is down, and for 5 seconds after your armor recovers.

Fugitive Skills
All of the skills on Fugitive are focused on heavy, long cop assaults. Not the goal here.

Sicario Perk Deck

The Sicario perk deck might not be the meta of DW, or OD, but on Normal, a two piece suit can take about 4 bullets from common enemies.

This deck also allows you to refill your armor on dodge.
That means you have 4 chances to dodge a bullet to replenish your AP (Armor Points)
You still got hit? Don't worry, the aced Hostage Taker will refill that little scrach in no time.

Also, that beautiful smoke bomb will help to cover yourself while interacting with the bags, garbage bins/portable toilets, or winch installment.
1. - Spawn Points

There are 3 spawn locations on this map, and you want to spawn on areas A or C due to the spawn area B being the farthest away from all 3 points.

If you are lucky enough, you will spawn on area A with the door to saw open right in front of you. You will start the deployment of the saw about 0:03, while on the other spawns it will take more than 0:07 or 0:10 to start it.

So, a 33% chance of getting the best spawn point (67% if considering point C).

This is probably the least time consuming RNG decision. The next ones, however, might screw up your whole run.
2.1 - Saw Doors and Spawn Point Relation
There are four doors around the map that can be opened using the saw.
  • Two located on the main lobby
If spawned on points B or C, you can continue without risking your good time.
  • One located on the second floor, near the entrace that Locke will tell you to cut open.
If spawned on points B or C, your run is pretty much screwed because of the route to reach the door takes the longest to reach from all 4 doors.

If spawned on point A, you can skip the objective of cutting open the entrace by jumping through the window at the left.
  • One located really close to spawn point A
if spawned on points B or C, restarting is somewhat recommended due to it being too far away and risking some time.

NOTE: Two cops will spawn near this access door if the saw is set to be placed there. Do NOT kill them. Throw a smoke near the saw point, or just ignore them to later apply the Joker skills on them.

This is important because of they being so close to the saw, saving you the risk of getting away of the saw to convince other units and giving the chance for the upcoming SWAT units to jam the saw.
x2.2 - Cutting Open
If Locke tells something like "Go to the 2nd floor, see if there is a weak spot to cut through" when entering the bank, or spawn on point A, there is a 50% chance he will ask you to cut open the floor.

If so, restart.

The cutting takes 1:30, and that's exactly base value of the saw to cut open, but there is one critical difference:
The saw timer is cut by 30% using the aced Drill Sawgeant, while the cutter doesn't.
3. - Security Access

Opening all entraces of the bank is the next step, and its very easy to do.
All the 3 doors on the 1st floor have a button to remove the barriers right next to them.

The only door that doesn't have a security barrier button is the door on the 2nd floor.
4.1 - The Vault Breaching Method is Thermite
There are two scripted locations where the thermite and all the other equipment will be set:
:
The screenshot on the left, or the construction area, is the best of the two for the equipment to spawn, as it is right in front of the bank, just crossing the street.

The parking lot, however, is nearly twice as far.

I am not telling you that you should restart if the equipment spawns on the parking lot, no, but you will have the bare minimum amount of time to get moving all 3 winch bags by yourself, which by the way are as heavy as gold bars.

If the thermite and C4 is stashed on the parking lot, pick up both of them so you won't waste time picking up C4 while you could be moving the bags.

If the thermite and C4 is stashed on the construction site, just pick up the thermite and run back to the vault door. The construction site is very close to the vault area, so you will have enough time to pick up C4 and move the bags.

If you equipped an HE ammunation Judge Shotgun, don't forget to keep shooting at your feet to get that sweet 30% speedboost, but only after a second of having armor available so you can also make benefit of the 1% bag slowdown resistance per each 10 AP.

Continue opening all the four garbage bins (or two garbage bins and two portable toilets, in the case of the construction area) to see if the RNG was gentle and decided to leave the winch parts on the containers.

NOTE:
I am saying that you should check the containers if they have winch parts, NOT to pick up the winch parts.

You will eventually return to the container where the winch parts are as explained on the next step.
x4.2 - The Vault Breaching Method is Drilling
This is yet another critical factor to the run.

If you see the loot drop zone near the vault, that means you have to use a thermal drill.

You do not want to use a thermal drill.

Didn't convince you? The timer of the winch was started as the 3 bags reached its drop zone.
That means I didn't start the timer after I was done:

- Adjusting the 4 screws.
- Carrying the hook
- Placing the hook
- Starting up the winch.

Even after all those extra steps, the winch still outmatched the drill, which by the way had the 30% drilling speed boost.
5.1 - Ready to Place the Thermite?
The timer will start as soon as the last thermite piece is placed.
So, as soon as you place the 4th thermite piece on the vault door...

HAUL A$S BACK TO THE CONTAINER WHERE YOU FOUND THE WINCH PARTS!
1 MINUTE AND COUNTING.

Remember to hurt yourself with the HE Judge Shotgun shells while not carrying anything, but give it a second after the armor is recovered while carrying a bag as explained previously.

Don't get confused, the drop zone of the parts is not the same as the thermal drill in neither of the two vault doors.
Drop off the winch parts on the displayed areas shown on the pictures.
x5.1.1 - Thermite in Place, but no Winch Found?

The answer is simple: Restart.

The waiting time for the winch parts to be delivered by Locke's secondary carrier is approximately 30 to 45 seconds.
That time could have easily been saved by having the winch parts already in place for when the thermite is done.

Instead, you have to wait for the thermite to be done, wait again for the parts to arrive, and then start moving the parts.
6. - Deploying and Protecting the Winch
If the trip mines are used strategically and not spamming them, the protection of the winch will be a simple walk in a park.

See, cops only know one route to shut down the winch, and so if you are able to block that spot with one trip mine, and place a new one after the fire of the previous activated trip mine is out, the winch will be over before you run out of trip mines.

Thanks to the large range explosion and fire bomb, one single trip mine can wipe clean a room and then continuing to keep out cops using its fire.
Placing more than one trip mine next to each other is a waste of resources.

You are more than free to place some on the doors that could have been accessed using the saw, however.

Here are some examples and the points where you should always have a trip mine up to prevent a cop shutting down the winch, based on where the winch is located.

7. - Vault's Open, Let's Go!
Don't get away of the vault door, just don't.

Here's what I'd recommend to do:
Because the build I used doesn't have an aced Parkour, I can't sprint while reloading, so when the vault door starts to open, I place a trip mine where the vault door should be, place the C4 on the floor tile, quickly shoot the trip mine, switch to the saw, wait for the bang and open the medallion box, and just mentioning it again: because you can't waste any sprint speed by switching weapons, so keep the saw up and don't switch back to the secondary.

You will be hurt by the fire from the trip mine that you shot. One damage tick from the flames is enough to deplete all of your two piece suit APs.

That will give you about 6.5 seconds of 30% speed boost (1.5 seconds while the armor is still regenerating*, and 5 seconds that last after the armor is recovered), which should be enough to reach the parking lot in time, and not even to mention the sewers that is way closer.

* This 1.5s can be cancelled if you dodge a cop's bullet. Results may vary.
8. - Escape Routes
The difference between the two escape routes is almost unnoticeable, but if you really want to go for the perfect run, the sewer escape might save you about a handful of seconds (maybe 3 or 5 seconds*).

One would think that the escape van would take an ethernity, like in most other maps where Twitch apparently is at the other side of the city.
On this case, however, he will arrive in approximately 10 seconds*.

The sewer escape is sightly faster because he will appear as soon as you start the thermite cutting process. By the time you are done with the 6 or 7 seconds* of thermite, just jump to the other side of the escape vehicle, and that's it.

*All of these times are an approximate value result from testing.
Finish! - Submitting a Run
Congratulations, you completed a speedrun on Brooklyn Bank under the Botless and Any Difficulty Solo categories!

If you managed to do every single step in a nice speed and got a decent RNG, your run should look something like this (Run by Cloud Dasher), or if you executed an almost flawless run with the perfect RNG values, something like the current (Jan, 19, 2018) WR holder, hahaha953.

Do you think it was an astonishing run strong enough to hold out a record on Speedrun.com?[www.speedrun.com]

Well don't be shy and go submit it!
However, just a reminder as mentioned on the introduction:

Official Payday 2 Speedrun Submission Rules:
  • - Friendly AI is allowed.
  • - Runs must be one segment.
  • - Runs must be played vanilla (no mods). The whole HUD has to be visible.
  • - IGT is counted through the days (incl. escapes).
  • - Show the crew stats at the end in your video.
  • - Submit ONLY your IGT not Real Time.
  • - If your run is botless, submit BOTH in Any% and Botless subcategories.
  • - Heists can't be played with mutators or in Crime Spree.
Questions and Answers
"What secondary would you recommend using?"
The Judge Shotgun with HE rounds to start the speed boost on APs reaching 0.

"Do you think this build/strategy can work on other subcategories?"
I just don't know. I haven't tested this build out on the Death Wish Solo subcategory. It might or it might not work, but I can't answer this question. I don't want to give wrong opinions on whether it could work.

"Well... but does it work with Bots?"
Oh yes, it will work on Any Difficulty (Normal) Solo with bots, definitively, using the correct Crew Management settings to give yourself that sweet faster interaction speed, increased dodge chance, and faster reload speed.

"Why would I take a recommendation from you? You aren't even in the speedrun leaderboard!"
I did try several times to get the first place, but random CPU bad performance issues, including FPS drops, locked to 30 FPS, and more, are not making this any easy.
Maybe one day when I get a stronger CPU I can give it a shot, but for now, I can just help other players with the capability to run PD2 like a beauty.
After many, and I really mean, many restarts, I learned more about this map than what I would learn if I didn't give it a shot to speedrun this map.

"Are you going to make any more guides like these?"
I'm not sure, I just did this because I'm getting sightly bored of the repetitive gameplay, and I wanted to try something new, and oh boy I did like it.
So I want to give a hand to other users that might also be getting bored of doing the same and want ot try to get into the speedrunning of Payday 2.

Any more good questions asked will be responded and might be added to this list, only if the user that asked the question allows it.

Just saw your submission, awesome job!
You didn't hurt yourself quitely often w/ the Judge HE for the speedboost, that was the only detail, but everything else was smooth and well performed without any cop interruptions. Good game!
