Introduction
First of all I must precise that I am not a native english speaker, if I did a mistake, please tell me in the comment section.

The origin of this guide is the Making Custom War Paints of CoBalt which I became "the comment administrator"(self-proclaimed) by my own power of answering the questions asked in the comment section. So this guide is a compilation of answer to many questions, with the intention of making the ultimate war paint guide to solve all your common problems.

I want my guide to be dynamic and I need questions to answer : be free to ask questions in the comment section of this guide.

What is a war paint ?

Appeared with the Jungle Inferno update, a war paint is an item(a tool) that can be used to repaint a weapon to a specific design. It is the continuity of the decorated weapons from the Gun Mettle and Tough Break updates.
A Macabre Web Mk.II War Paint can be used to get a Macabre Web Mk.II Sniper rifle

What is the difference between war paint and paint can ?

Paint can is a different tool that can be used to paint characters cosmetics like hats in a certain color. For the moment it is not possible to use that kind of paint on weapons and war paints.

Where can I get a war paint / decorated weapon ?

Case specific skins/war paint can be obtained by opening a case with the correct key bought in the mann co store :
• Decorated :
• War Paint :

With the campaigns some items can be obtained by completing contracts
• Decorated weapons with the Gun Mettle and Tough Break contracts.
• The Dragon Slayer (Factory New) war paint by completing the "Dominate Mercenary Park" contract of the Jungle Inferno campaign.
• Some war paint can be bought from the gift store with blood money during the Jungle Inferno Compaign. These are always Factory New.
• Keyless crates from Jungle Inferno contracts and gift store contains one random war paint depending of their collection.

The community market containing a huge variety of decorated and war paint in various prices with almost all the parameters : Wear, Strange, Unusual...

Trade-up generating one new item by the (terrible) sacrifice of ten others.
Generally used to get strange version of higher grade skins that cannot be obtained by a different way.

Trading with another player. Like the community market except the way to pay is different depending the player you do deal with.

What is wear ?

Wear is one of the parameter of a decorated weapon. This define the wear aspect of the weapon.
The wear is also responsible of the marks of blood that can be seen randomly on the weapons.
From clean to destroyed :
• Factory New
• Minimal Wear
• Field-Tested
• Well-Worn
• Battle Scarred

How to create a simple War Paint ?

Firstly some programs are required to be able to work on a war paint :

2D bitmap editing program like :
• Gimp
• Photoshop
• Or something else

Optionnally 2D vectorial editing program like :
• Inkscape
• Illustrator
• Or something else

Programs used to extract and converting the game files :
- VTFEdit[nemesis.thewavelength.net]
- GCFScape[nemesis.thewavelength.net]

STEP 0 : Find a idea

You can get inspiration with the officials maps, goodies in the Valve Store, the comics, etc. which are the best sources. Else it seems that everything can work because the decorated artstyle is now (sadly in my opinion) destroyed since Jungle Inferno (Example : Miami Element).

STEP 1 : Choosing a war paint / decorated to work with

As a good start we will work on the Civic Duty Mk.II war paint because it is one of the cheapest war paint and it is using three pattern slots (the current maximum is five slots but more expansive, four slots is the best deal).

STEP 2: Setting up your work folder

To create a war paint we will need to create a mod for the game. Firstly we will need to see a bit how are structured the game's files to know where to find the useful ressources for your work.

For this, we need to go to the "tf" folder that can be found at this adress :

Sometime the steam folder is in the "Program Files" without the "(x86)".

In this folder, there is the "custom" folder that will contain your mod. Create it if not existing.
And also there is two files of interest :
• "tf2_misc_dir"
• "tf2_textures_dir"

STEP 3 : Creating your first pattern

How to publish my work ?

• STEP 1 : Launching the game, on the main screen, click on the little wrench icon.
Alternative way : « If you don't have the "wrench icon" cause you have a different hud, Just create a server and select the map "itemtest", when You joined the map, press F7, And that's it.» -Sprasty
• STEP 2 : Click on the "publish new item" button.
• STEP 3 : You can now complete with the informations, the description isn't very important yet and you can do it later. For the picture size, you need a square resolution, I personally use 2048x2048 pixels. Then, click on the "other..." button to import your file.
• STEP 4 : You can import your file with the explorer, it needs to be a .zip file.
*I found a tutorial here if you do not know how to create a .zip file*[www.wikihow.com]
About your .zip file, it must contains all your textures used for the war paint.
• STEP 5 : New informations appeared. You can place a checkmark on "war paint" for obvious reason and then click on the "submit" button.

*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'**'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*
How can I stop my sticker from tiling on a skin ?

You need to put a checkmark in your sticker's vtf file on the following checkboxes :
Clamp S
Clamp T
*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'**'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*

Paintkits_master
This section if I decide to make it will talking about a outdated thing which was truly AWESOME named paintkits_master, I will give all my knowledge about this file that have gave me a huge liberty on creation, allowing to make decorated in the same level of complexity than what we can see in the Tough Break decorateds.

Here two examples of what we can do with it :

*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'**'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*

What is paintkits_master ?

Paintkits_master is a text file that was used to define the composition of the decorated weapons. It is currently not in use since the Jungle Inferno update that replaced it with the proto_defs file which is, sadly, protected (changing the information in it will crash the game).

*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'**'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*'*

How works paintkits_master ?

Paintkits_master is a script that using the Python's writting style (with the tabs). Once launched, the game will read this file to get the composition informations, if there is something incorrect in the file (like a not closed block "{{ script }"), it will print a error message and quit the game. Another fact, your weapon will appear fully red if you doing some specific mistakes like mispelling a pattern's name :

Does the MK.II use different patterns than the original ?

Unless possible exceptions these are using the same.

Glossary
Decorated : Is the item quality itself, colored in white. See also :
item quality on the tf2 wiki

Decorated weapon :
1] skins from the Gun Mettle and Tough Break update, from these collections : Teufort ; Craftsmann ; Concealed Killer ; Powerhouse ; Harvest ; Gentlemanne's ; Pyroland and Warbird.
2] Weapon with a finish / Weapon painted with a war paint.

Paintkit : Used by developers and some rare persons to talk about the finish style. "War Paint" is more commonly used instead.

Skin : Synonym of decorated weapon. But can be used as a general word in gaming to talking about any decoration/customization/different version/... of an already existing item.

War Paint : The tool used to paint weapon. (See also : question "What is a war paint ?" in "General Questions" section.) But also used to talk about the finish style.

Interesting. I know that skins (not warpaints) used to have a file where you could basically control everything about the warpaint, but I don't think you can successfully launch the game after altering that file now.
Any idea where the file for warpaints would be? I would love to ask the creator of the helldriver warpaint just how he changed the orientation lock but it doesn't seem like there is any easy way to contact him.
Pitchumi  [author] 13 Dec, 2022 @ 2:28am
I don't know how to do this. The only thing I know is that the config of each warpaint is written in a specific file, TFVpdSharp is supposed to make it editable but haven't succeed to use it yet.
Orientation and position are defined by a range, so it is possible to lock no matter the seed.

I need help.
Is there any known way to cause a warpaint to have an orientation lock?
Helldriver is a skin with an orientation lock. The creator claims that the warpaint replaces smissmas camo, a weapon with no orientation lock.
How is this possible? Also, is it possible to lock a texture completely so that it is always in the same position and orientation for every seed?

Very good news, something is currently being done to "uncompiling"/"compiling" warpaint scripting files:
https://github.com/RickyvdW/TFVpdSharp
All my hope that it will be a thing !

I never experienced something like this, my only guess is on the vtf part of your texture, maybe the problem is on the version or on the parameters.
Geebanger0 30 Sep, 2022 @ 8:45pm
Not sure if I’ll get a response here, but my warpaints are sometimes showing up as a solid black texture in game. It usually happens for one particular custom texture, but only on certain weapons. Some weapons are also missing all of their textures, but if I delete my custom textures they show the default ones just fine. I’m not sure how to fix this: I’ve deleted my entire custom folder, uninstalled the game, nothing seems to work.

how can you get the gif on general questions?
Pitchumi  [author] 20 Dec, 2020 @ 12:06pm
Sorry to answer that late, this is depending of your 2D program, one way is to erase the part you want transparent, the other is to edit the alpha channel of your image (a special layer that define how transparent each pixel are). Also don't forget to export your image as a .png or a .tga as theses formats support transparency (.jpg don't).

I got Clamp S and T, and I fix that, now I'm trying to figure out, how to make the square transparent.

"I'm using the stickers on the Yeti Skin, but each time I edit it, it makes the whole skin turn into the sticker repeating. How do I stop that?"

From → How can I stop my sticker from tiling on a skin ?

You need to put a checkmark in your sticker's vtf file on the following checkboxes :
Clamp S
Clamp T
