Levelling and Achievements
First of all, there are many costumes and other times you can gain by leveling up your character, increasing the reputation with your faction, and by completing certain achievements.

Go to "Profile" -> "Rewards" to see what things you can unlock and what you need to do to get them.

Win in the Dev Games
Next, you can attend the bi-weekly "Dev Games" event. It's currently Tuesday and Thursday, and you can check the exact time in the "Community" -> "Events" section. Times there are localized to your own time zone.

The password for this event will be released first on the Twitch stream and then subsequently in global chat, so if you really want to get in, I suggest tuning into the stream to get the lobby password early. Then just check the match list for a featured match.

In order to actually get a free item, you need to be on the winning side once. If you win, just take a screenshot with Steam (default Steam screenshot key is F12) of the victory screen where all the players are listed.

Then take this screenshot and send it to contests@musegames.com along with your chosen item (see the "Applicable Items" section of this guide on which items you can choose).

Protip: if your team keeps losing, try getting into the PvE match at the end of the event. Winning a PvE match will also get you an item.

Note, that playing multiple dev game matches in one day will not get you multiple items, so if other players are trying to get in (ie. spectator slots are full), give others a chance and vacate your slot once you get a win.

These days there are regular giveaways of dyes and other items. Check the Discord or ingame missions.
Attend Dev App Testing Sessions
This is slightly more involved.
Dev App is basically a second copy of the game, which is used by the developers to test things before putting them into the main game. You need a key to get Dev App, but it's free. All the relevant information can be found here: https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,8511.0.html

In summary, there is community council group of players, the "experimental crew" that thinks of balance suggestions and tests them each weekend. They also test upcoming patches and new content coming to the game. Join the official Guns of Icarus Online Discord server and go to the #game-testing channel to give input and join discussions on things that might get tested.

The actual testing sessions are Saturday. You can check the exact time in the "Community" -> "Events" section in the main game. Times there are localized to your own time zone.

In order to get a free item, you need to install Dev App, register an account, and join one of the official testing sessions. After the session is done, go to the "Community" -> "Events", within Dev App and click on the "Sign Up" button, which will open a survey in your internet browser. Fill out this survey and provide feedback on the things you tested. At the end of the survey, you can specify the item that you would like to receive (see below for applicable items).

You can get one item per session.
Applicable Items
When choosing items for Dev Games wins and/or for Testing Session feedback, you can choose almost everything that you can find in the marketplace.

However, there are some restrictions:

>You may NOT choose bundles. Individual items only; no "Consummate Collector" bundles and such.

>You may NOT choose charity items. You can recognize charity items by their description, where it will say: "Proceeds from the sale of this item will go to [insert charity name here]"

>You may NOT choose items created by community members and accepted through the Steam Workshop. You can recognize these because the description will say: "This item was submitted to the Workshop by [insert Workshop author's name here]"

Everything else that is in the in game Marketplace can be chosen, including ship themes and figureheads.
If you chose a dye, you will generally get 2 copies of the dye.

If you chose a costume piece (head ware, goggles, body), make sure to specify the gender you want this item for, since the item might exist under the same name for both males and females.
Redeeming Items
Once you submit your survey or send your email, it may take some time for you to get a response. Don't expect to hear back immediately – it usually takes 1-2 weeks until a Muse intern gets around to sending out a massive batch of emails.

Once you get an email, it will contain an item code. In order to redeem this code, go to the in game Market (in the main game) and click the "Redeem" button at the bottom of the screen and enter the code there. You can also give the code to someone else, and they can redeem it instead. Item codes are not account bound.

In summary, in addition to the normal leveling process, you can get almost all the Muse-made items in the marketplace for free, by attending Dev Games and Testing Sessions. So you could get up to 3 free items a week, if you are really dedicated.

That's true. Didn't think of that, although that certainly works as well :D

There's one more way to get free stuff, but you can't control it. CA's and Mods have a list of item codes they can give away in response to a player under special circumstances (like Applauding a player).

So whenever you see a CA, be on your best behavior! (what's that? it sounds like some psychology trick to get you to behave?)
