The first ever AWA World Heavyweight champion, who also held the NWA title simultaniously, O'Connor was a top level athlete with a solid amateur background, having won championships in his native New Zealand. O'Connor was just as adpet at tag wrestling as he was in singles competition, winning tag belts around the United States.
