Remember to finish a single Rally Stage before doing this

Do not Add Event, choose more option to Load Event

Here only display the stages that you had completed in career

Once you success, there will be a ghost icon next to the player name

Each event have few racing location, you're require to toggle ghost one by one

• Black = Ghost, Red = Player, White = A.i. Racer
  
• You can toggle up to 5 ghost car
  
• You can download any ghost from friend/global leaderboard
  
• If you adding more than 1 event, each event require to "Confirm" before toggle other event
  
• Once you loaded into game, there is no more setting for Ghost Function
  
• The standing position will not display ghost name on the HUD, until end of race
  
• You can change the weather, day / night
  
• Toggle ghost in all stages and save into "My Event" will not available to load Ghost
  
• An incomplete event will not load Ghost, if you restart DiRT4
  
• Each location you may addin Service Interval to repair your car
  
• You can add ghost from other leaderboard (different vehicle)
  
• All the ghost car will be same as player's car no matter what car friend had selected

Maybe you had a wrong Driving Assists, that could make you slow down on acceleration.
Turn off/reduce Stability Control
if you still unable to catch-up on start up. Maybe you need turn off the Launch Control

• You had selected a different class of vehicle, which mean different leaderboard
  
• You and your friend might playing different Handling Style (different leaderboard)
  
• Your friend might not yet complete the current stage

I don't think so. Ghost car mode already exist in 1990's gaming, and no problem having them toggle on and off. My suggestion is, do not apply maximum number of ghost car. For beginner, just apply your own personal best is good enough.
