How to Have Overlapping Edges (Off-grid Tiles)
By Toxic Coffee
Have you ever wondered why main levels are allowed to have overlapping edges but the editor cannot? Here's a solution!

The First Steps
So here you are, probably because you want to get rid of ugliness such as this:

Unlike most tricks in this list of guides, this does not require any fancy-shmancy notepad knowledge or modding. Just a little bit of editor know-how.

Placing Off-Grid Tiles

To freely place down tiles/edges, have the desired tile selected and simply hold down ctrl. Place it down like any other object and voila!

The Complicated and the Complications
Now to get to the part you're probably here for: overlapping edges!

This process is just like most in the editor: confusing and partially broken. Luckily, I have found a few common behaviours that off-grid and on-grid tiles follow;
  • On-grid tiles remove any off-grid tiles overlapping them
  • Off-grid tiles can overlap each other and stay that way for the most part (more on that later)
  • Off-grid tiles are difficult to remove, trying to remove them usually leads to removing nearby tiles
  • If a tile is placed as an off-grid tile but is placed exactly in a grid square it turns into an on-grid tile (yes this seems obvious, but they can be easily removed unlike off-grid tiles)
Putting all of these points in consideration, we are now ready to begin.

Overlapping Tiles/Edges

For this to work, the tiles overlapping and the tiles being overlapped must be placed off-grid.

It is recommended that you set your mouse sensitivity to the lowest possible, as placing the tiles off-grid requires complete precision. Edges that look similiar to the tiles underneath them (such as white on white) make it difficult to line them up, if this is an issue then I recommend that you either temporarily remove the floor underneath or make them contrast. This is a trial-and-error process, but with enough practice and dedication you should be able to line up the edges perfectly and get a result like this:

Magnifique!
Potential Problems and Dealing with Them
IMPORTANT:
There are certain cases where off-grid tiles dissapear spontaneously, making this process extremely irritating and the result a hit-or-miss. However, there is one way to prevent this from happening.

Off-grid tiles are only removed when the editor is opened after placing them down. To prevent any off-grid tiles from being evicted DO NOT PLAY YOUR LEVEL IN THE EDITOR, save your level and exit the editor. Playing it normally will keep the tiles where they deserve to be, but they will be removed if the editor is opened again. Because of this it is recommended that off-grid tiles should be the very last thing you add to your level when finalizing it. If you are working on a multi-floored level do not switch back to any floors that have off-grid tiles on them (if you believe that they will be removed).
Conclusion
That's all there is to it! At least for now, somebody will eventually find every nook and cranny to this trick. I would like to know what else there is to this, so please leave a comment down below if you know more than I do. Otherwise I hope you learned something from this and enjoyed it, this is my first proper guide so give me some slack and suggest how I can improve.

Thank you. Bless.

Unfortunately, walls do not work the same way. Check this guide for a way to place off-grid walls

Nice! I’d known this for a while but never bothered with it because they seem to disappear on me. Glad you figured out why. Looking forward to that special corner guide!
