Description
Era - 1980s - Boxing - Heavyweight

One of the greatest upsets in modern sporting history took place on February 11, 1990 in Tokyo, Japan. James "Buster" Douglas, an overlooked challenger took on the undefeated champion of the world, Mike Tyson. While Douglas brought a good jab, solid footwork and crisp combinations to the game, he was not seen as having any more of a chance than the other fighters Tyson had destroyed. Douglas did hold wins over quality fighters like Greg Page, Trevor Berbick and a young Oliver McCall, but had problems with consistency.

While consistency was an issue with Douglas, motivation was certainly not for the Tyson fight. Douglas's mother had died three weeks before the bout, filling him with the sort of resolve that could move mountains. And mountains did move when he fought Tyson, beating him to the punch and working him over for round after round. He survived a close call in the eight round, but caught the champ with a thunderous uppercut, finishing him off in round ten. Buster Douglas had done the unthinkable. While he would go on to lose badly to Evander Holyfield, Douglas had grasped a moment of immortality when it mattered.
