The Remnant also have better tech than you give them credit for, especially considering how early you can meet them. Among other things, their batteries are the best you can get before meeting the Coalition. They also have VERY useful ships: the Ibis is a purchasable ship that carries drones and the Gull is medium sized courier with a built in cloaking device. If you can't think of ways to use these ships, well, I dunno...
Finally, the Hai are more than just the Shield Beetle. They offer significant upgrades to many human techs quite early in the game. Particularly their batteries, generators and shields. Their weapons are solid, if not exceptional.
Your guide needs an update.
It's called Pug Biodefenses. It'll give you 250 capture defense per outfit.
Oh and their Peace Keeping staff is slightly better than Korath rifles, but way harder to source them vs. Korath Thermal Repeater rifles
It remains pretty maneuverable, though you need to rely on other ships to disable stuff.
