The quick.save file's instance collections are not particularly useful for editing, since as you note they contain mostly just lists of factions. But you can use the changes list or the creation of a type column to navigate there, and identify all the entries.

As for renaming the faction, that sounds like you renamed the squad, not your faction. Open the map, the go tot he faction relations tab, you can rename your faction there.
Your instructions for renaming characters is like Microsoft's documentation in the 1980s. The instructions made sense once you knew how to do it. ;)
Oh, and I did rename my faction to Sassy's Band. It says that at the top of the middle window at the bottom. But after each person's name, on the top of the left window, it still says Nameless. Doesn't matter that much. Thanks anyway.
That said, if you're just trying to rename a character, you can do so in-game via a plastic surgeon. No need to get into save editing for it unless they can't speak.
Same with renaming your faction, you can do so in-game in the faction menu accessible from the map.
