Sydney, Australia (by Robert)

Description
Sydney!
One of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world!
One of the most haphazardly planned, and least affordable cities!
A slapdash colonial outpost, a sprawling tapestry of NIMBYs, tangled train lines, and growth corridors based on cattle trails. They built a bustling tram network then tore it apart and are building it again decades later. They built a monorail and nobody used it. It's a mess but we love it.

What will YOU do with Port Jackson, Parramatta River, and Botany Bay, wiped clean of industrialised settlement? Will you build a better tomorrow, or lovingly recapitulate all of our civic mistakes and make a busted replica? This map stretches from Rose Bay in the east to the A3 motorway in the west, and from roughly St Leonards to Port Botany, representing a stretch of land once populated primarily by the Cadigal, Cammeragal, Wangal, Kayimai, Borogegal, Gorualgal, Kameygal, Wallumattagal and Bediagal nations.

DETAILS

This is a 1:1 map made using 5m resolution elevation data available from Geoscience Australia, part of the Australian Government, and is hand tuned and smoothed for playability. Heightmaps exported from popular resources like terrain.party are much lower resolution and don't capture the variation in altitude. It also features a mostly accurate track of the M1 and M5 motorways, and the north shore freight corridor up to Strathfield. The airport peninsulas have been removed from Botany Bay. If you've got more road options than the base game I really recommend tearing it up because I did not fine tune the Cahill Expressway as much as it will need to sit alongside developed city. As for that double bridge.. I put it there to motivate me.

On reflection I doubly recommend V2, this one has messed up elevations that will make your project much harder. That was the whole reason I redid it 😅

I will try to figure it out.. I recommend my version 2 of Sydney over this one, though. Included a road map overlay image for reference with that one.

Hi Robert, can you share the lat and long for the corners of your map ? Trying to recreate Current Sydney and that would be helpful.

Hi OZZO. This was my first (and so far only) attempt at a map for Skylines, happy to chat about the process I went through.

Hi Robert. Great work here! I am working on a very detailed realistic map covering CBD, Eastern Suburbs and Lower North Shore up to Mosman beach. I'd like to talk with you about the techniques you were using and happy to share with you my thoughts and hiccups as well. My number is 0451255432

You really are good at this stuff, you should make more maps, even if they aren't inspired by other real world maps! Obviously inspired by something, but not accurate to real world places.

Thanks so much! I agree, I'd love to see some other portions of Sydney, particularly the northern suburbs, but I was stubborn with myself about staying 1:1.
I've got a sentimental bias for the west over the eastern suburbs, but I mainly shifted it south-west to give the freight corridor, ending at the airport and Port Botany, its proper space. Was wary of overbalancing to suburbs and ignoring the industrial regions of Sydney.

I will think of the coast next time.. maybe a Gosford/Woy Woy map..?

This is an excellent map! Definitely the most accurate Sydney map on the Workshop. The only problem in my opinion is it doesn't have the full coastline. I'd prefer it sacrificed some of the Western Suburbs so you could build/reimagine Bondi, Manly, etc.
