Making simple maps, trenches craters and the like
By Celeste and 1 collaborators
This is a guide to give basics about making your own map and to help those just starting out and getting a feel for the map creator. I will be updating this about once a week, with extra parts that may be useful. Generally speaking this will be more useful for world war two and modern maps, however the skills can be transfered over to other eras.

Introduction
As i said in the description this is going over the basics of map creation, this will hit craters, trenches hills ect and will be added to over time.

This should be useful to new players looking to make their own maps, or those who already know the basics but want to find ways to improve.
Getting up the environment controls
This is how you get up the controls to edit the map, if you're looking for basic controls they are here, making rivers, adding trees and what have you.

At the top of the screen you will want to click the button that a mound of dirt with leaves sticking out the top (the one next to the two swords). Once you click that your edit terrain options should appear, this will have controls ranging from the map size to adding rocks and rivers, these are mostly setting up the map at a basic level.

Now onto the fun part :P There will be a button on the top left of that "edit terrain" box that just popped up. If you click that you will get a box that looks like this.

(Going from left to right)
Raise = making hills and small mounds.
Lower = lowers the ground good for trenches craters ect.
Set height = good for making cliffs or making the map higher. (more on this in the next section)
Dig river = does what it says on the tin, makes rivers.
Smooth = this makes those hills or holes you make smoother and able to climb up easier a good tool.
Road = makes paths roads ect.
Starting your map
If your map is going to have trenches, holes, hills and craters or generally any kind of environmental change, you will want to first select the "set height button" that i mentioned in the previous section.

You will want to make the map generally higher so it makes trenches easier to make and holes easier to adapt and change instead of making a map full of hills. Once you have selected this tool pick a height. The height i have selected in the picture below is a good starting hight, neither too low or too high.

At the end it should look like it is flat and higher.

If you want to take the lazy route i have uploaded a map wich is raised, flat and already made for you.

Once you have the entire map at the height you want (this will take a little time) you can start adapting the map. If its a world war two map for example you can add trenches and/or craters to make it seem like there has been explosions.

As a general rule you want to design the map first and adapt it and add in props last, as changing the map after you have added props can make them float and generally take away the feel of a map.
Adding props and the map tweaks
Now with the basic map made you can start adding props, if you have trenches add to the edges, put sandbags and logs so detail them and make it more obvious that they are indeed trenches. My example would be battlefield craters everywhere, so fill those with boxes and other small props, generally get the most of the craters a little something that makes them stand out and gives a little bit of cover.

The picture above is from my first map, as you can see i have outlined the trenches and you may or may not see (due to the height i am at) the craters have props in them to make them seem bigger than they really are.

Generally you want your trenches smooth so you can walk in them, so no craters in them, but props so that there is cover but adding props also adds to the feel of a map.

Inbetween trenches you want craters and general hills for basic cover, if there are none of these the troops and players would be cut down and that finishes the game quicker than people would like.

Also a small hint would be to smooth the craters so people can easily get in and out of them.
Finishing tips
Generally you want to have an idea of what you map will be before you start. If its gonna be a D DAY landing, a fortress assault, a zombie map or trench warfare. This will set the era, making props easier to choose and making the map generally easier to design from the ground up.

Props are always good but you dont want to place them everywhere without any reason, a farm will have crops and fences but wouldnt have castle walls or machine gun nests for example. Collapse parts of your walls and trenches and fill them with boxes so that it adds to the feel of the map.

This is my first guide, i hope you find it useful, if there are any suggestions for improvement just ask, and if you have difficulty even with this guide feel free to message me and i will see if i can help.

anytime mate, happy to lend some vet map knowledge down. it can be a bit janky to mess with but you get the hang of it eventually its just a process.

Yeah seems like that's the best way to do it hah. It feels like some of this should be easier but it's my first time messing with map making. Thank you for the quick response though!

oh christ its been a while since i played, if i remember rightly how it used to work is you would place them far apart from each other and then pick them up and move them around, think like in sims with object moving. its been several years tho so it may have changed a lot since my time lol

Just started getting into map making in this game, (Also my first time taking the game seriously) I wanted to ask, how can you remove the snapping onto other props? For example, placing sand bags next to each other but manually.

i have not played in a while, if i remember right it should be as easy as selecting and moving it, or if that isnt a thing delete it and replace it
