CO released as a subscription based game, with optional lifetime subs for purchase, but shifted to a free-to-play a few years after release (~2011). Likely, if it has anything like a sub right now it'd be some sort of premium membership - a sort of 'pay extra to get some extra features' type of thing, which may or may not include the freeform slots - and freeform slots are game changing.
I do apologize if I missed covering the sub topic in the video, but I'm afraid it likely wouldn't apply anymore anyway.
CO's a great game, but I never agreed with it's f2p mechanics, most especially the separation of freeform and archetype slots. If you really want to enjoy the game, be willing to pay for freeform.
