So you want to play a ranged char?

How?
Very simple, very straightforward.

Use an XBox controller.

I am not kidding, the difference this has made to my playing style cannot be underestimated. The massive difference is the automatic targeting. This makes playing ranged characters several degrees easier, even if you have to get used to the controls again.

This also gives you several excellent sideeffects like for example being able to use a Heavy Bolters spin-up attack and switch between targets without dropping the firerate or being forced to use manual shiftclick aiming all the time.

I realize this is not really much of a guide, but please, try it. And enjoy.

Not a joke. The controller implementation has massive benefits over the mouse and keyboard control scheme which is not openly visible if you have never tried it. No need to buy a controller if you don't have one, but if you have a spare controller lying about, I suggest you give it a good go before you dismiss it.

this is hilarious. I'm going to pretend this is a joke because when I read a guide I expect to see more then "go out and buy a controller" as an advice.

Or, you know, rebind move keys to WASD and disable mouse click move.

A year later and suddenly I get comments on this. Also faintly amusing since "just hold the shift button" doesn't nearly function the same as the controller targeting. There is a reason why I am advocating to switch from mouse to controller and I used to play this with mouse. The difference is night and day.

I just hold the shift button and it lets me shoot with the first skill easily even if im not targeting anything. works great with all skills too

Good guide. I've also been enjoying playing the ranged Crusader with a controller. The controller support is one of the reasons I was interested in this game.

Any character has some good ranged applications. The Psyker for example has some skills that simply outright ignore cover with very good damage and range, the Assassin actually would probably rank the lowest because there isn't a massive advantage to her unique weaponry yet in my opinion... the Crusader in my opinion is the gold standard, simply because he can tank so much while still dishing out considerable damage.
My go-to startup is simply to get 10 points in Toughness ASAP for the +30 health regen and then drop 2 or 3 skillpoints in the Health tree where you get +20 health regen below 50% max health. From that point on you pick your fav weapon and start dumping everything into damage damage damage.
Psyker and Assassin simply are not as forgiving. 50 health regen you can reach by Charlevel 10 is just so comfortable.

Do you recommend Assassin or ranged Crusader or..?
