Springfield M1903

The first mass-produced version of the Springfield M1903 rifle, based off comtemporary Mauser designs such as the Gewehr M1898, and meant to replace the outdated and outperforming earlier rifles. Firing the .30-06 cartridge and using a modern stripper clip, the Springfield 1903 went on to become the service rifle for most units of the US Armed forces from it's inception in 1903 up to the Vietnam war, being complemented by the M1 Garand during WW2 and the Korean war, and ultimately replaced by the M14.
During WW1, an modified bolt chambered with .30-18 Auto rounds and capable of semi-automatic fire dubbed the Pedersen Device was introduced, alongside the Mk.I rifle to accept it, although the war ended before it could be used. Most units were destroyed after the war and only a few Pedersen Devices remain in existance.

Lee-Enfield SMLE No.4 Mk.I

The successor of the No.1 rifle, designed shortly before WW2. The No.4 featured a cheaper and more robust action, simplified components and a new ladder rear sight that proved more accurate than the volley sights used in other rifles. It was meant to replace existing No.1 rifles, but due to production shortages both rifles were used in WW2. A scoped version, the No.4 Mk.I (T), was also produced.

Name: Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk.I

Tokarev SVT-40

The Soviet Union's only successful semi-automatic rifle during WW2, the SVT-40 was designed as a simplification of the SVT-38, featuring a one piece stock, a folding magazine release and overall righter weight. As with the SVT-38, scope rails were featured in the receiver, though the weapon was not very good as a marksman gun. The German invasion heavily disrupted the production of the rifles however and the Red Army was forced to issue Mosin-Nagant rifles once more. Nevertheless, about 1 million SVT-40 rifles were produced by the end of WW2 and it's design was instrumental in the development of several other weapons. The Germans used it in considerable numbers as the G.259(r) and based their own semi-automatic rifles upon it. After the war, it was replaced by the SKS.

Tokarev AVT-40

A fully automatic modification of the SVT-40 rifle developed in 1942 to alleviate the need of machine guns by the Red Army. It turned out to be a failure as the weapon was nearly impossible to control in automatic fire, on top of wearing down faster.

M1 Garand

The first semi-automatic rifle to be used as a standard-issue rifle, the M1 Garand acquired a legendary reputation from it's use by US forces during WW2. Designed to replace the Springfield M1903 rifles in US service and originally conceived to fire a proprietary intermediate cartridge, it was rechambered for .30-06 at the request of the army. The weapon quickly proved itself to be accurate and reliable, if heavy. It used an en-bloc clip system that greatly sped up empty reloads of the rifle, increasing it's rate of fire, though this caused issues for clip reloading. After WW2 it was quickly replaced by the M14 rifle, itself being essentially a modified Garand with a magazine and automatic fire. Thousands of military rifles were offloaded into the civilian market, where it has remained popular ever since.
Despite it's legendary reputation, the M1 rifle suffered from several issues that were carried into it's successor. It was quite heavy, produced a lot of muzzle flash as well as climb during recoil. It was prone to dirt and jamming thanks to the large open chamber on top of being unergonomic in contrast to the Springfield. Capping all of this off was the fact that the rifle was designed to fire an intermediate cartridge, but ultimately saddled with the overpowered .30-06 Springfield rounds that it was not prepared to use. It is more impressive perhaps, that despite these massive flaws, the Garand managed to become one of the most successful rifle designs of the 20th Century.
