Description
Era - 1960s / 1970s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Chuck Wepner grew up tough. He became tough enough to join the US Marine Corps. And he fought tough, taking several punches to give one. There is no question that Chuck Wepner was one tough guy. One needed that sort of fortitude to carry on in a career of boxing, after being KOed by Buster Mathis, George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Joe Bugner through the '60s.

And yet, Wepner carried on, managing to rebuild a winning record, beating some solid opponents including Ernie Terrell, and eventually in 1975, finding himself in a Heavyweight title bout against the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali.

Chuck Wepner was undoubtedly outmatched and badly in this fight. But he would not go down easy. Instead, Wepner drew upon his inner strength, hitting Ali with every cheap shot he could muster, and fought as much to survive as to win. And survive he did, up onto the 9th round, where he was credited with a knockdown on the reigning champion. Wepner was thrilled with the accomplishment, but Ali soon rose up, in an incident that was seen as much as a trip as a legit knockdown. Up until the end of the 15th round, Wepner stayed in the ring with Ali, holding in with him right until the end of the final round, where Wepner was dropped and TKOed.

This accomplishment, of course, was the primary inspiration for the plot of Sylvester Stallone's script for the original Rocky film, and while Wepner's name was not directly attached, he would be known as the Real Rocky forever more, a man who did what he could to make a stand, no matter what the odds were.
