The Problem
The main menu is flickery as ♥♥♥♥ and even ingame you see occasional flickering and it is totally driving you nuts.

It mostly looks like that banned Pokémon episode:

The Cause
The reason this happens is very likely that you have an unequal dual screen setup. This was the reason for me at least.

My main screen is 144hz Ultrawide, my second screen is 60hz 16:9.

What this means is that my main screen refreshes the picture on screen up to 144 times per second (if my pc can handle it) and the other one up to 60 times. Frostpunk for some reason has problems with this (other games don't).
The Fix / Workaround
Essentially this is not a real fix, the fix would need to come from the developers. This will at least not make your game strobe like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disco ball.

Adjusting these settings in game only will not fix anything!

You have two options here:

  • Option 1:

What we're doing is: we're going to even out the Hz numbers.
Go to your monitor settings (you probably know how to get here, if not, google it)

Then rightclick one of your monitors and choose "properties". In the next window go to "monitor" like this:

This shows you the Hz number. If you do not know how much Hz your other screen is running at do the same for the other one and then just set the same so that for example both screens run at 60hz.

  • Option 2:

You disable all screens apart from main one for the duration the game. So just like option 1 go to your monitor settings and then just hit disable for them all.

In both cases you need to adjust the in-game Hz value to match the one you set in windows in your graphics settings:

Bonustip:

Both processes can easily be automated by using this great tool:
https://www.realtimesoft.com/de/ultramon/download.asp

It lets you create monitor profiles or set a specific monitor setting for different screens while you run a certain game.

It costs a little but if money is all the same to you or you have a general use for it: it is really good, I've been using it for years!

Check of they're actually running at the refresh rate they're supposed to (outside and inside the game). Otherwise you'll need to swallow the pill, that none of us actually NEED a second screen during gameplay and it's just nice to have and resort to option 2 in this guide. Sorry pal.

If you find a solution, I'd be happy if you post it here so I can add it to the guide.

I have two 144hz displays, same model. The game config matches the refresh rate, yet the flickering doesn't disappear. I'm getting desperate, any suggestions?
