Winter War

The Winter War was a military conflict between the Soviet Union (USSR) and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion of Finland on 30 November 1939, three months after the outbreak of World War II, and ended three and a half months later with the Moscow Peace Treaty on 13 March 1940. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from the organisation.

The conflict began after the Soviets sought to obtain some Finnish territory, demanding among other concessions that Finland cede substantial border territories in exchange for land elsewhere, claiming security reasons—primarily the protection of Leningrad, 32 km (20 mi) from the Finnish border. Finland refused, and the USSR invaded the country. Many sources conclude that the Soviet Union had intended to conquer all Finland, and use the establishment of the puppet Finnish Communist government and the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact's secret protocols as evidence of this, while other sources argue against the idea of the full Soviet conquest. Finland repelled Soviet attacks for more than two months and inflicted substantial losses on the invaders while temperatures ranged as low as -43 °C (-45 °F). After the Soviet military reorganised and adopted different tactics, they renewed their offensive in February and overcame Finnish defenses.

Hostilities ceased in March 1940 with the signing of the Moscow Peace Treaty. Finland ceded 11 percent of its territory representing 30 percent of its economy to the Soviet Union. Soviet losses were heavy, and the country's international reputation suffered. Soviet gains exceeded their pre-war demands and the USSR received substantial territory along Lake Ladoga and in Northern Finland. Finland retained its sovereignty and enhanced its international reputation. The poor performance of the Red Army encouraged Adolf Hitler to think that an attack on the Soviet Union would be successful and confirmed negative Western opinions of the Soviet military. After 15 months of Interim Peace, in June 1941, Nazi Germany commenced Operation Barbarossa and the Continuation War between Finland and the USSR began.

As we know, things have evolved, Finland having stopped fighting in the spring of 1940. But this French expeditionary force, made up mainly of Alpine troops and of Légionnaires, whose special vocation in this case was to fight in the cold or in the mountains, will be turned from his path and sent to Narvik.
After the Armistice of June 1940, these Légionnaires from the 13th DBLE (13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion) will represent in London the first unit of the Free French Forces.

This era is often poorly known. We can even ask ourselves the question if we did not want to "forget" this particular conflict. Indeed, it was difficult, after the war, when the Soviet Union was on the side of the Allies, who were fighting for democracy and the liberation of the occupied European countries, to recall that only 4 years earlier, this country played the role of the "villain".
In France, at least, there was solidarity for Finland at the end of 1939: fighter planes were even delivered to it. An expeditionary force was too organized, at the beginning of 1940, just when France was preparing to declare war on the Soviets.

Nowadays, Russians seem to have a mixed attitude about the 1939 Winter War, with a common idea being that both governments had responsibility for the conflict. You rightly gave the Soviet leading concern about the land around Leningrad - their worry was that a big power, especially Germany, would attack through Finland's territory like how Germany attacked France through the Netherlands and Belgium.

The secret protocols that you mentioned put Finland in the Soviet "Sphere of Influence". In 20th century diplomacy, this meant that a country would be influenced by another country without being taken over by it. It was a term of British origin and meant that "3rd Party" neutral countries like Afghanistan, or in this case Finland, would be influenced or swayed by a power like Britain, the Russian Empire, etc. When the Soviet Union annexed the Baltic countries in 1940, Hitler considered it a violation of his agreement with the USSR. In 1940 as well, Hitler stationed troops in Finland, and Molotov considered it a violation of his agreement with Hitler. Molotov objected to Hitler, and Hitler waved it away, falsely claiming that it wasn't important.
