Description
Era - 1930s / 1940s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Violent Elmer Ray was a hard hitting, aggressive fighter who was always a dangerous opponent for anyone who dared answer his challenge. Ray may never have been the Heavyweight Champion, but he did manage to defeat the likes of Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles and Lee Savold, and also went on a fifty fight win streak from 1943 to 1947, after losing to Turkey Thompson, another unheralded hitter of the era.

Ray's career took some interesting turns at times, winning a series of battle royales early on, wrestling crocodiles, sparring with, and busting up the great Charley Burley and having fought Joe Louis in three exhibition bouts. Few know of Elmer Ray these days, but those who read his story will find one of the best unknown Heavies in boxing history.
