Report a translation problem
I do not recall if there are certain actors that you may not be able to change the tag or layer of, but that may be a possible scenario. Shouldn't be the case for Static Mesh actors however.
Unfortunately, there is no way to rename an object from "StaticMeshActor_01" or similar, so tags and layers are the few ways you will be able to distinguish between different Meshes or Actors in a level. It would be very useful if it were possible, but unfortunately it is not :(
