3ds max is probably my issue. Been using blender as I can't put the money out for the correct program, and I bet that's where the majority of my issues lie. Maybe I should spring for that free trial, so I don't have to build the skeletons myself (aka, get frustrated and give up, since I don't have modeling experience).

The models contain animations as well as some GDI/scrin assets, it will get you started on the right foot.
To answer your question yes, a lot of it I had to pose myself in 3ds max, some of it I did not. I recommend the assets from Renegade X and use the GDI assets and use photoshop where necessary. This is the best advice I can give you, best of luck!
