Introduction

Kai is a balanced character that makes for a great choice when learning how to play. He leans towards an offensive playstyle due to his +1 ATK and his hyper, but is adept at collecting stars as well. Protagonist's Privilege lets Kai pick fights without fear of counterattack, so Kai can get away with using some boost cards that other offense characters would shy away from due to their symmetrical effects.

Play Kai if:
  • You are learning the basics and want a safe offensive character.
  • You want to keep your options open.
  • Stars or wins both seem like good ways to win.

Pros:
  • Well rounded stats and good offense.
  • Hyper lets you fight whoever you want without fear of counter attack.
  • Hyper gives you three safe turns against the boss.

Cons:
  • Depends on cards for consistency in battle.
  • Susceptible to low rolls.
  • Has a hard time catching tricky opponents.
  • Predictable playstyle.

Unit Card

HP: 5 | ATK: +1 | DEF: 0 | EVD: 0 | REC: 5

Kai's balanced stats mean that he is quite capable defending himself in combat.
The +1 ATK makes getting KOs in enemy encounters much easier. Unlike other offense characters, he has no penalties to his defense and evade rolls, but no bonuses as either. Kai can fight on battle spaces as he likes, but needs to be careful not to let his health get too low, as his dodge depends entirely on the results of his rolls.

Hyper Card

Protagonist's Privilege
Type: Boost
Level Requirement: 3
Cost: 20 stars

Effect Duration: 3 chapters
When you are allowed to attack first, the opposing unit cannot attack (once per combat).

Protagonist's Privilege lets Kai attack players and land on battle spaces without fear of counter attack. When you initiate combat, your opponent's attack is skipped, allowing you a free strike at them. Players can still play battle cards. The effect lasts for three turns, making Kai terrifying to be in front of when it is up. This card is great for picking fights with other offensive opponents and will prevent you from taking damage if you land on a battle space. If used when the boss is active, you will be able to land on boss spaces without fear of being KOed. It can even dissuade opponents from attacking you if it means that they will have to fight the boss afterwards.

If your opponent would attack first, their attack is not negated and you will still take damage. In addition, Protagonist's Privilege only skips their first attack. Effects like Little War or Final Battle will result in you getting a free hit before combat continues as normal for the rest of the rounds.

Stages of the Game
Levels 1-2
At the start of the game, you only have one card. Thank's to Kai's ATK bonus, he can fight on battle spaces pretty reliably, allowing for some early win normas. Try to avoid fights with players that have an advantage over you in combat, such as bullies and evasive characters. Instead, focus on collecting stars, drawing cards, and picking off NPCs and injured players.

Level 3
At level 3, you now have access to Protagonist's Privilege. Try not to use it willy-nilly due to the high star cost. Save it for player encounters and boss infested areas.

Levels 4-5
If you have collected a lot of wins early in the game, you can focus on using Protagonist's Privilege in conjunction with other boosts and battle cards to farm wins. Many of these effects are expensive, so make sure that you are getting the stars you need from the KO and that your chances of a KO are high before you commit your resources. If you are low on wins, but high on stars, play defensively using Protagonist's Privilege to pick on other players when it is safe to do so.

The Boss
Kai is one of the best equipped characters for fighting bosses due to Protagonist's Privilege. Since they won't get to counterattack you, you can get damage in when other characters would be fearing for their lives. Without Protagonist's Privilege, you will be depending on defensive battle cards to make it out in one piece. Try not to use your offensive cards unless the boss's heath is very low, as you may just set up the KO for someone else.

Deckbuilding Overview
Ranking
I use letter ranks to rate cards. Cards are sorted by type, then alphabetically within each tier. This is by no means an absolute measure of how powerful each card is. Feel free to use any cards you want to fit your strategy, although I advise against bringing F cards. When it comes down to it, play what you think will be the most fun for you.

S: Necessary. Godlike synergy or required for the character to function. (Note: Not every character has one of these.)
A: Powerful. A high priority card that will usually be in your deck.
B: Very Good. Not necessary, but should always be considered.
C: Average. Nice cards to have, but might be outclassed. Also includes situational cards.
D: Poor. Helps your opponents more than it helps you.
F: Awful. You are actively hurting yourself by bringing these cards.

The cards Kai brings to games depends on whether he is using primarily battle cards or event cards to aid in combat, so he doesn't have any necessary cards.

I'm on Fire!
Gives you that extra little boost to secure KOs on NPCs and low health players. Great with your hyper due to the low cost and the DEF penalty being negated.
Passionate Research
Helps you find Protagonist's Privilege sooner and see the top three cards of the deck.
Party Time
Gathers up all the players on a random panel, then ends your turn. Big synergy with Protagonist's Privilege. Since your opponents move first, you will get to pick and choose who you want to fight.
Super All-Out Mode
Gives each player a huge edge in their next combat. The buff stays active until your next battle. Amazing with Protagonist's Privilege, due to your opponent not getting to take advantage of the buff. Keep in mind that you won't be able to play both in one turn and it costs 50 stars to play both.

B Rank Cards

Review
Sink or Swim
Kai has good enough ATK to pull this off, especially with the boost from Super All-Out Mode. He is also tanky and evasive enough to have a good chance of not getting hit with it himself.
Dash!
Mobility is important for Kai, as it lets him catch up to players after popping Protagonist's Privilege. Dash! is a great one-shot effect for a small cost and has the potential to let him move the most spaces in one turn.
Nice Present
Lets you draw cards, which you need to be consistent in battle.
President's Privilege
Makes every other card you play until your next turn free for 10 stars. Saves you some stars on expensive cards, especially when you want to play a card at the start of your turn and in battle in the same turn.
Holy Night
Increases the stars everyone earns passively, helping you fund your expensive battle cards and giving your opponents more stars for you to steal. If you aren't proactive in combat, this will benefit star gatherers more than yourself.
Little War
Combos with Protagonist's Privilege to give you two attacks in one turn on an opponent. If you fail to KO them, they will get one counter attack. The effect lasts for three turns. Very expensive, so play with care or use President's Privilege or Play of the Gods to lessen the dent in your wallet.
Play of the Gods
Since event cards affect everyone, this can be a good tool for getting Super All-Out Mode or Little War out sooner for way fewer stars. It sometimes even steals people's hypers, but since Protagonist's Privilege is a boost card, you don't have to worry about that happening to you. Great even if your opponent plays it.
Bloodlust
Lets you whale of people while keeping your health high. Discard this if nobody is close enough so you don't bleed out.
Windy Enchantment
A long-term option for mobility that boosts your movement rolls by 1. You will have to discard it when you want to level up, but this can work to your advantage if you are going for wins to reach level 4. The longer you wait to level up, the longer it will take for the boss to show up, which will make it easier to obtain wins and stay alive.
Go Away
Prevents players from achieving normas and can serve as an impromptu warp panel if you need to be anywhere else.

C Rank Cards

Accel Hyper
Gives you a huge burst of damage in battles late game. Unfortunately, it can be used by even your meekest opponents to do the same to you, so be careful fighting people without Protagonist's Privilege once they hit level 4 if you plan on bringing this.
Big Magnum
Big damage at a high star cost. Can't be used at 1 health. Great for one-shotting players when paired with Super All-Out Mode.
Dark Side of Business
Lets you punch tanks in their wallets rather than their impenetrable defenses. Does not work very well on NPCs unless they have KOed a player that was carrying a bunch of stars. If you can easily KO the player, do that rather than play this card. Also good against Chicken and friends as it bypasses their passive to cause them to lose more stars.
Final Battle
You and the opponent fight until one of you is KOed or 10 rounds pass. You get a free attack with Protagonist's Privilege active before the two of you duke it out. Similar to Little War, but can be used for a specific battle that favors you rather than all battles.
Portable Pudding
This card can be used to bait opponents into attacking you while you are low on HP, potentially taking them out if they weren't expecting you to survive long enough to counterattack. Just be careful with this card, as the same can happen to you.
Rbits
Your best defensive option for the early game. Can save your bacon in boss encounters where you don't have Protagonist's Privilege. Don't bring many of these, as they will be used against you late game when you are going on the offensive.
Reverse Attribute Field
Although it causes you to lose 2 ATK, other characters will be much worse off if their stats get reversed. Good for decks that don't use Super All-Out Mode.
Backdoor Trade
This can help you catch up, but Kai generally has better cards he can run.
Extend
Lets you get back up the next turn after being KOed. This keeps you in the game as well as potentially giving you an opportunity for a revenge attack.
Gentleman's Battle
Lets you take advantage of Protagonist's Privilege to smack someone from anywhere on the map, provided they have full health.
Lonely Chariot
Risky mobility that slowly drains your health. Protagonist's Privilege can help mitigate the risk of using this, but you will need to heal to keep going for long. KO yourself via a neutral source like Mimyuu's Hammer or Cloud of Seagulls to avoid the star penalty.
Long-Distance Shot
Soften up your foes before taking them on. Can make the difference between blocking and surviving and forcing a dodge.
Nice Jingle
Gives you a nice star boost for your expensive battle cards. Gets better as the game goes on.
Princess's Privilege
Get dealt a bad hand? Throw it away and get a new one!
Pudding
A free full heal to keep you fighting fit.
Saki's Cookie
A smaller heal than Pudding, but can be played much earlier in the game. Also less detrimental id an opponent plays it.
Stiff Crystal
Prevents a trap from potentially ruining your day. Ignore the part about the stars, you will rarely get enough to make it worth it. The trap negation is enough.
Indiscriminate Fire Support
This can help poke down opponent for you to pick off. Kai's good HP prevents him from being too disadvantaged by this card, excluding bad RNG.
Oh My Friend
Summons the boss. Causes a problem for everyone but you as long as Protagonist's Privilege is active.
Star-Blasting Light
Really expensive. Generally not worth bringing, but can be good against characters that like to bring traps.
We Are Waruda
The much more reasonable way to deal with traps. Moves them rather than destroying them, but on big maps it can be just as good and can be played much sooner for a much lower cost than Star-Blasting Light.
C Rank Cards (Part 2)
Lost Child
An alternative mobility choice. Instead of making you move faster, it makes you go backwards. Lets you run into players more often, but also puts you in the line of fire if you land in front of a player. If a player that you want to attack passes you, discard this card to start moving normally again.
Lucky Charm
This is a nice way to boost your star collection while nobody is near, but toss it as soon as someone approaches so you can play your battle cards.
Metallic Monocoque
This is a nice card to defend against the likes of Krila, Iru, Suguri 46BY, or anyone else who depends on dealing damage outside of combat. Kai doesn't play many effects like these, so he won't end up countering himself.
Poppo the Snatcher
Lets you steal some stars in exchange for lowering you DEF. Anyone who tries to do the same to you is looking to get clobbered.
Assault
Place on the bases of weak characters you know you can beat in a fight, as you can't always count on having Protagonist's Privilege when it is triggered.
Dangerous Pudding
Skips the victim's next turn, making it easier for you to catch up to them.
Encore
This trap can help you get more wins, stars, or cards depending on how you use it. Place it somewhere you know you will be walking but opponents will not.
Heat 300%
Makes an opponent much easier to deal damage to. Is less effective against characters that rely on evading attacks like Suguri or Aru.
Piggy Bank
You can place this on your home base for easy access, but everyone does this. Instead, place it somewhere off the beaten path or on a drop space and come back for it late game.
Piyopiyo Procession
Land on it for a chance at some wins or place it on a weak opponent's base to make them fight a gauntlet.
Poppoformation
This can screw you if you land on it, but can be great for taking out tanks or safely fighting bullies.
Sky Restaurant 'Pures'
A nasty trap to leave on a star collector's base. Can steal the game if the right person lands on it.
Wanted
Make the victim worth more wins on KO. Place on home bases.

D Rank Cards

Review
Desperate Modification
Too risky for you and sometimes lets opponents survive your juiced up assaults.
Extension
Random and unreliable. Don't bet your life on this one, but it is possible to get some pretty crazy stuff from this including hypers.
Quick Restoration
A defensive option that heals back damage taken. This is much better suited for tanks and will be annoying when used against you.
Rainbow-Colored Circle
Other characters can make better use of this. Can be good for avoiding damage in encounters with enemies with low ATK.
Serious Battle
This will be used to counter you more than it will help you.
Rainbow-Colored Circle
Other characters can make better use of this. Can be good for avoiding damage in encounters with enemies with low ATK.
Shield
Only usable on defense. Makes it easier for your victims to survive while offering you little if you draw it.
Shield Counter
Can be used to negate your attack. Especially devastating if Super All-Out Mode is active.
Completion Award
You aren't playing enough traps to make this worth bringing.
Flip Out
You really shouldn't be trying to land on drop spaces.
Mimic
You depend on your hyper for late game combat. There are few instances when you want someone else's hyper and fewer when you would want them to have yours.
Path Blockers
Could be decent for a trap-centered playstyle, as it stops players so you can catch up to them.
Sweet Destroyer
This card isn't good unless your name is Yuki (Dangerous).
Treasure Thief
Hard to use unless you KO a player and want to steal their cards or they attack you.
Accelerating Sky
This event makes it easier to KO tanks but harder to KO evasive characters. An odd alternative to Super All-Out Mode.
Cloud of Seagulls
You can't choose who you hit with this, so it's rarely worth playing let alone putting in your deck.
Dinner
You have better healing options that don't heal your opponents. The upside of this one is that you will be healed no matter who plays this.
Forced Revival
Hard to use effectively and very bad to have used on you.
Gift Exchange
Sends your important cards to another player. Can potentially give you hypers as well as give your hyper away.
Mix Phenomenon
Changes the board into random tiles, excluding home bases. Doesn't really affect you that much, but it does cause heal tiles to spawn and makes the board safer overall. Leave this one for someone else to bring, but feel free to play it if you draw it and aren't fond of the board.
Scary Solicitation
Nobody wants to play this card, so why bring it?
Sealed Guardian
Expensive, dangerous, and only playable at level 5. Use with care.
Unpaid Work
This does nothing but bad things for Kai unless you are going full on for wins.
D Rank Cards (Part 2)
Price of Power
Your level 3 cards will be too expensive when this is useful. Most of the time, you will just be discarding it.
Unlucky Charm
Costs you stars every turn and is easily discarded if the player has a full hand.
Bad Pudding
Probably the worst level 1 trap for you to land on.
Brutal Prank
This one rarely hits its mark and you have to wait until level 3 to play it.
Exchange
Only useful when you are really behind. Can be used to deny normas unless you are ahead.
For the Future of the Toy Store
Usually only playable early game due to the star restriction. Could be useful if you are playing a lot of expensive cards.
I Wanna See You
This put you in front of opponents if you play it, which is the opposite of what you want. If someone else plays it and you land on it however, you will be in a prime position to use Protagonist's Privilege or Super All-Out Mode.
Invasion
Unless they get the seagull, this won't do much.
Mimyuu's Hammer
Underwhelming unless a low heath character like Nanako triggers it or the victim is put to 1 health.
Present Thief
Hard to use effectively. Causes you to lose all of your cards if you land on it first.
Sealed Memories
Lets everyone see the victim's hand, but otherwise does nothing if they can remember their cards.
Tragedy in the Dead of Night
Can't be played until level 3 and doesn't help you much unless you get a really good card. On the bright side, triggering your own trap does nothing since you receive the card back that you discarded.

F Rank Cards
Image
Name
Review
Tactical Retreat
Lets opponents flee from you, wasting precious buff time from Protagonist's Privilege, Super All-Out Mode, etc. You have better options for defending yourself, like Rbits and Quick Restoration.
Ambush
Lets opponents attack you after you attack them. Also ends their turn, forcing you to move in front of them. An effective counter to Protagonist's Privilege that you usually can't use effectively.
Here and There
Teleports you away from the person you are chasing or your home base. Party Time is a much better teleportation option for you.
Out of Ammo
Prevents you from following up Protagonist's Privilege with other boosts or playing it at all. The effect only lasts one turn, but you don't want this in the deck regardless. If you draw it, you can use it to prevent opponents from playing battle cards when you attack them.
Scrambled Eve
Erases your hand, leaving you with only your +1 ATK to aid in combat. Since it shuffles the cards back into the deck, there is a danger that someone else can draw Protagonist's Privilege and use it against you. Characters that run this will benefit from it much more than you. Don't play this unless you are short on cards.
Serene Hush
Prevents you from using your combat buffs for one turn and potentially allows the target to get behind you.

Sample Decks
Balanced

2x I'm on Fire!
1x Rbits
1x Big Magnum
1x Dash!
1x Nice Present
1x Passionate Research
1x Party Time
1x Super All-Out Mode
1x Go Away

This deck has a little of everything, using offensive battle cards backed up by some utility in the form of mobility and card draw. Go Away rounds out the package and can be placed on enemy bases to deny normas.

Super Duper All-Out Mode

1x Passionate Research
2x President's Privilege
1x Little War
2x Party Time
1x Play of the Gods
2x Super All-Out Mode
1x Windy Enchantment

This deck aims to take control of the late game by spamming Super All-Out Mode with Play of the Gods and President's Privilege. Windy Enchantment gives you some much needed mobility. You will be depending of your opponent's defensive cards, so be careful about who gets behind you. Consider using Party Time to get aggressors off your trail.

Lawbringer

2x I'm on Fire
1x Passionate Research
1x Party Time
2x Super All-Out Mode
3x Wanted
1x Windy Enchantment

This deck uses a lot of the same tools as the last two, but also adds Wanted to the mix to speed up the acquisition of wins.

Who to Watch Out For
Bullies

Early game, Kai does not have the tools to deal with these characters, leaving his survival entirely to dice rolls that are heavily in favor of the bully. Late game, Protagonist's Privilage gives you the upper hand on offense, but these characters can still KO you if the get the jump on you without battle cards.

Aru (Scramble)

Aru's hyper Santa's Job can give you her cards. In exchange, she will get stars and you will be unable to initiate battles for a chapter. This can be problematic as it makes your hyper useless for a turn and will force you to pass someone that you were planning to fight, giving them the advantage in combat. KO her to force her to drop her hyper.

Tsih

Tsih is hard to hit due to her +2 EVD, meaning that you will usually need the help of battle cards or Super All-Out Mode to take her down. Her hyper Stealth On is a double whammy. First, it prevent you from challenging her to battle for a few turns, which causes you to end up in front of her. Then, it gives her a +2 ATK bonus when she counterattacks you. She even gets another +2 ATK if she is holding a gift card, so she hurts a lot.

Sweet Breaker

Sweet Breaker's hyper Melting Memories will replace a card in your hand with a new one while reversing your entire hand. Not only does this mess up your prep work, but you will also be unable to make important decisions without playing cards blindly. If you fight her with your hand reversed, she will get +1 to her ATK, DEF, and EVD for each reversed card, so try to get these cards out of your hand before engaging her. Without her hyper, she is similar to you in that she depends on good rolls and battle cards to be effective. If you can KO her before she gets her hyper off, she will be down for a while thanks to her high REC.

Co-op
(I don't have an image of Kai's co-op card yet, so bear with me. In co-op, Kai has 6 REC. Protagonist's Privilege now always gives the player priority, even if the enemy attacks them.)

Kai is a great attacker than can do decently well in any of the roles. Protagonist's Privilege is buffed in co-op to always give its user priority in battle, even when an opponent attacks them. This paired with the counterattack negation make him very durable in combat for an offensive character and a great choice for lower-level players who have not unlocked the role buffs yet.

Attacker
Kai is one of the more durable attackers out there thanks to his neutral defenses and his hyper. Use Protagonist's Privilege to avoid all combat damage for three turns and blast the bosses with your good ATK stat.
Defender
Kai has a good amount of health and the defense boost makes him pretty durable. Defender can be decent for him, but only once the shield cost is reduced to 1.
Support
Protagonist's Privilege lets Kai wander through dangerous zones in order to heal and revive his teammates. He can make use of the +1 EVD boost against smaller enemies, but many of the bosses will rip right through it.
Avenger
Kai can really dish out some damage with the health boost this role provides. Consider replacing Protagonist's Privilege with the role hyper if you have it unlocked, as Protagonist's Privilege interferes with your ability to do big damage by making you go first.
Dealer
Protagonist's Privilege is good for attackers, but not much else. Avengers are actually hurt by this card, as they go first and want to be hit to boost their damage. There are better dealers out there that can take advantage of the role's unique buffs.

Conclusion

Sweet Breaker's hyper actually only hits one card in each other player's hand - not all of them.
Therefore, if you only had one card playable (or unplayable) at the start of your turn you can make educated guesses about which one you lost.
