Things you'll need
Short Checklist
  1. It's important to note that this guide is mainly for props and ragdolls.

  2. Make sure that when you extract the addon, it's in its own sub-folder (usually for props/ragdolls there are three folders, so make sure those folders are inside of ONE folder)

  3. Make sure the mod is compatible. Lots of legacy addons branch from way back when the Steam Workshop didn't exist, and the game has undergone many updates since then. So make sure to check the release date of the addon itself.

You'll need WinRar, a free program that allows us to extract files. You can get it here[rarlab.com]

You'll also need Extended Spawnmenu for the addons to show up.
Step 1 - Downloading the addon
Alright, so all you need to do for Step 1 is download a Legacy Addon. It's very simple, you can search for them on these websites:

Step 2 - Extracting the files
Now that you have downloaded the addon, you can extract it to your addons folder.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Locate your Garry's Mod addon folder. It should be where your installed Steam games are, and the path should look something like this:

    This PC\Local Disk (C:)\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons

  2. Right click on the file.
  3. Click "Extract Files..."
  4. Extract it to the previously found addons folder.

Finish!
See how easy that was? You can now use the addon. If you can't locate your addon, here ya go.

1. Open the spawnmenu (Q)
2. Scroll down to the bottom and click the plus (+) sign on "Addons - Legacy".
3. Enjoy!

That should finish up this guide, I hope you enjoy!
For Maps
For maps, they have their own folder. Here is an example path for reference:

This PC\Local Disk (C:)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\maps

These files should not be in a folder and should be extracted directly into your maps folder.
Keep in mind that maps are usually in .bsp format (i.e. the file will be "map.bsp").

On top of that, some maps come with NAV files (i.e. "map.nav"), which is the navmesh for NPCs, so if you want NPCs to behave properly you should put that file in there as well.

Hopefully, this will clear up any of the problems some of you are having.

@SupremeMarmotte This guide is severely outdated, so I would suggest going somewhere else (such as Gamebanana [gamebanana.com], Moddb , or even NexusMods [www.nexusmods.com].
