This is an alternate history universe set after events 26 September 1983. This particular scenario explores events set 20 years after nuclear exchange between NATO and Warsaw Pact.

tl;dr: USSR was successfully able to invade and occupy weakened UK not long after the war. US leads an amphibious assault in an attempt to liberate the British Isles and close off USSR's un-impeded access to the Atlantic Ocean. This scenario is the first phase of this plan, to prepare and clear ground for land invasion.

26 September 1983. On that day, much feared nuclear war descended upon the world. The global nuclear exchange annihilated most of the population and industrial centers around the globe. United States suffered multiple nuclear detonation in 40 different centering on major industrial and population centers. Other NATO countries suffered a similar fate: UK having most of large cities and ports annihilated. Germany faired worst of all, being engulfed in a nuclear firestorm from weapons unleashed by both sides in the resulting, short lived conflict. Even now, the entire country is no more than a radioactive wasteland serving as a barrier between what is left of NATO and Warsaw Pact nations.

Brief timeline of events leading up to this scenario:

26 Sep 83: Nuclear war erupts, some say due to a computer error in Soviet EW system. The United States and its allies retaliate in full force with strategic and tactical nuclear weapons. This exchange lasts for several hours rendering majority of all population centers a radioactive rubble.

27 Sep 83: Aboard NEACP, President Ronald Regan attempts to reach out to Soviet Premier Yuri Andropov. However, Andropov never made it to Mount Yamantau bunker and has been pronounced dead. Marshal of the Soviet Union, Sergei Akhromeyev has taken control of the government.

29 Sep 83: US and USSR Governments agree to a halt of hostilities with understanding that the US will withdraw all of its remaining military forces back to CONUS. The NATO alliance dissolves as contact is lost with most governments. All that remain want to focus on burying their dead and rebuilding their cities.

14 Nov 83: All US forces retreat back to the US and are tasked to work with of Army Corps of Engineers to restore order and rebuild a devastated nation now descending into chaos. New US capitol is established to Denver, CO.

1 Jun 85: Nationwide civilian communications in US are restored. Limited contact remains with UK. It is now revealed that UK government has been thrown into a civil war following the attacks. Some remaining nuclear weapons are used within the UK. These events prompts other remaining nuclear nations to agree to dismantle their remaining nuclear arsenals as to make sure what remains of the world is left for the future.

12 Oct 87: UK Government recovers from over two years of civil war and adopts an isolationist policy.

8 Nov 88: Ronald Regan is elected president for the third term. He vows to restore US military might and to rebuild Navy left virtually untouched after the war.

12 May 92: As a surprise to everyone, USSR invades the UK and Ireland. France declares neutrality as it is unable to provide any military assistance. The US attempts to intervene using volunteer forces, but the island nations are blockaded by the Soviet Navy.

2 Apr 94: US begins major military buildup program after transferring all remaining manufacturing and technological assets from former economic centers to the mid-west.

31 Dec 02: US demands USSR withdrawal from the British Isles. USSR provides no response to these demands.

1 Sep 03: US and Canada assemble a large military force for invasion of UK. Due to majority of satellites being destroyed, the entire buildup is mostly done in secrecy.
