dude you put the hero you want to control in the first slot. they made the charater selection in a way that let you chose both your avatar and the hero you like to play the most in combat
Their are plenty of status and elements, he is playing on easy mode where they don't exist though. I'll fix his stupid. You CAN switch characters in combat, you can even do mystic art switches. You can even have up to 4 people playing coop locally.
