Installing mods and maps
For workshop mods: Simply subscribe to the mod and it will be downloaded when the game is launched.

For outside mods:

http://l4dmaps.com, http://l4d2maps.us, and L4D2 Gamebanana[l4d2.gamebanana.com] are popular websites for mods and maps.

  • Download the mod.
  • The file should be downloaded in a zipped folder, so unzip the file to any location. It should be a .vpk file. Leave the folder window you unzipped the file to open.
  • Open Steam and go to your game library. Right click on Left 4 Dead 2, and select "properties." Click on "local files" and select "browse local files." A new file browser should open, with the main L4D2 folder (steamapps>common>Left 4 Dead 2).
  • From the new file browser, select the folder "left4dead2." From this folder, select the folder "addons."
  • You are now in the addons folder, and this is where you should put your .vpk mod files. With the folder still open where you unzipped the add-on file to, copy and paste or cut and paste the .vpk file to the L4D2 addons folder.
  • Your mod should now work when you open L4D2. Most mods and maps will work in Linux just like in Windows or Mac.

Do not unpack the .vpk files, any files that are not in .vpk format will likely not work in L4D2. The correct .vpk files should work in L4D2 after being placed in the addons folder without any further installation necessary.

A nice little guide. Valve did a good job making l4D2 (and a whole lot of other games) as easy on Linux as it is on Windows. (I assume Mac OSX as well, but I have had no experience with that).

There is though one little bug with addons, that is present in the Linux version of L4D2, that is not in Windows. Luckily, that bug is rare, and easy to fix:

If you have downloaded a VPK-file where the filename has multiple dots in it, (example: SuicideBlitz.v2.vpk ), the addon will fail under Linux L4D2. If this happens, simply rename the file and remove the extra dots. (example: SuicideBlitzv2.vpk ).
