Just to jump in MidwestB's behalf here, and defence. That diagram and sequence was taken from the engine guide I did for Wrench way back in January 2019, just two weeks or so after it first came out in to early access.
I took that diagram directly from the manual that was in-game at the time, and that in turn was taken by Alec, one the devs, who took it directly from the official Mazda factory service manual.
There have been a couple of thing's I've questioned him about which seemed a little odd to me, but apparently Mazda seemingly likes to do weird and wonderful things that most other engine manufacturers wouldn't do.
So it would appear that that diagram is correct according to Mazda themselves.

pretty sure you mixed up 7 and 8 on the cam bolts because that aint a spiral
