Description
Era - 1920s / 1930s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Toronto native Larry Gains was one of the great unanswered questions in boxing history. Gains defeated two lineal Heavyweight champions in Max Schmeling and Primo Carnera over the length of his career and held the Canadian Heavyweight and British Empire titles. He had a powerful overhand and could apply heavy pressure on any of his opponents.

But Gains was unable to gain a chance at the Heavyweight championship of the world, or the British title, due to the color of his skin, an abominable "color line" that was not lifted until Joe Louis won the belt in 1937. He did settle for winning what was called the World Colored Heavyweight title on two occasions. A number of losses against lesser opponents and the death of his trainer during a fight in 1932 did not help his cause either. Despite it all, Gains forged a legacy as one of the unheralded talents, a man who did great things in his career, but could have reached even higher, if circumstances were different.
