Transporting Goods Vertically Directly (Elevator, Escalator, Lift Substitute)
By catboy princess
I independently discovered a method of vertical transportation that I believe is the fastest, most direct method of transporting goods vertically up and down using minimal ground-level surface area as of the time of writing.

I independently discovered a method of vertical transportation that I believe is the fastest, most direct method of transporting goods vertically up and down using minimal ground-level surface area. I would like to share it.

How does it work?

We start with some basic facts:

1. Silos and Barns have a height of a few blocks (in the range of 3-4).

2. The greatest height which still allows you to input and output goods for Silos and Barns is 3.

3. Goods that travel into a structure effectively concurrently inhabit all spaces that the structure fills.

Connecting the dots:

1. Create a tower of scaffolding. Like so: https://i.imgur.com/CaTL2HP.png

2. Every third scaffold, place a scaffold jutting out. These will be our "side scaffolds."

3. For each side scaffold, add an additional scaffold on one of its sides perpendicular to the side scaffold and the tower in an alternating, zig-zag fashion. Like so: https://i.imgur.com/DMEUo1h.png

4. Add Silos to each of the zig-zag, outer scaffolds.

4.1. IMPORTANT: If your tower is meant to lift goods up, the Silos must NOT point towards each other.

5. Add conveyor belts in-between the Silos. Make sure they are pointing in the right way for whether you want goods to go up or down :) (hint: they should alternate directions following the zig-zag)

5.1. * IF GOING UP: Add Grabbers on each of the conveyor belts. Each Grabber should point in the same direction as its belt.

5.2. * IF GOING DOWN: make sure the Silos point toward the conveyor belts such that the goods jump to descending Silos.

Finished example of a tower that lifts goods up: https://i.imgur.com/IQS2mRM.png

(If this tower was to bring goods down, the grabbers would be removed, the conveyor belt directions would be flipped, and the Silos would be facing toward the conveyor belts so that they can output in a "downwards" direction.)

thanks for your comments @Ness, i'm pleasantly surprised that this trick is still somehow relevant. I haven't played this game in a while but I'm glad it's still helpful :dip:

It occurred to me last night that ramps might work. Got it condensed to a 1x3, pictured here with the grabbers removed so you can see what's going on: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2663585921

It's easy to build, too. Place down the the stilts, support, and crate for the elevated side. Press Tab to get the column select tool and capture just the elevated crate with it, then press Ctrl-C. You'll now have a ghosted copy of the stack on your cursor. Use Page Up/Down so that the stilts are lined up with your cursor, then you can just place each stack by targeting the top of the crates. For the ramps, rotate your view so you can see the inside of the central column, then snap them to the supports under the crates.

It works with upwards sloping chutes, too. The items even travel at "level ground" chute speed. Again, I deleted some grabbers so you can see the chutes more easily: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2663591875

It's been a while since brigadon asked, but yes, crates work. I was able to get it as small as 3x2. Because crates can't stack directly on top of each other, nor can chutes, I don't think it will be possible to go smaller.

To get the parts in place, get them where you need them horizontally, then press Page Up to lift them into the air.

If I were going to build something like this again, I would probably build each column of crates first so I could connect each rotation of the chutes all at once. Trust me, constantly rotating the chutes is a chore. This should also work with conveyor belts.

All that said... definitely use silos if you can build them.

I also use silo so I can build chutes over the mining sites and keep free space for carts. In fact, I use silo almost everywhere there is gathering units, so chutes are never on the ground and my peons can move freely.

I always make flour on a building flying over my farm. You just have to add a floor over your farm, and a silo behind the farm, 2 tile over the ground. Put the building on the 2nd floor and connect everything with chutes

That's awesome dude! I've been playing with building up as well, I love this! Thanks for the post! This is my little idea of building up, I think I have a use for this in that! yay!

thank u for this. my earth temple spawned in a huge crater like 5 blocks deep and i was dreading the poor rails that were gonna have to get earth crystals out of it

@brigadon: i haven't been playing. If the storage crates are tall enough, it will work. (I remember Barns also working)
