Modding Ys 2 to replace the PC-88 music with the TurboGrafx-16 music (or any music you want)
By rpryke
Do you miss the TG-16 soundtrack when you play Ys? Or perhaps you've never experienced it before.
This guide will show you how to change the music from the PC-88 music to the TG-16 music.
I also cover how to change the other OST options as well.

The reason that this guide mainly focuses on changing the PC-88 music is that the TG-16 had 11 new tracks done as redbook audio for the game, but left the other tracks the same as the PC-88 release. Thus if you want to be closest to the TG-16 release you should replace the relevant PC-88 music files.

I. Obtaining the music files for the TG-16 version if you have the CD
If you own the original TG-16 CD you'll need to rip your CD to obtain the .wav files.

To do this you'll need a ripping tool as the TG-16 disc can't be read normally in a CD-Rom drive to extract the music.

You can find a tool to help with this here:

TG-16 audio ripping tool[www.ysutopia.net]

Using this tool will extract all of the audio files into .wav files.

Download turbo rip and save the zip on your hard drive.
Once you have done that extract the program.

It is important that you put the program turborip in a folder where you want the Ys .wav files to be located and that you have at least 1GB of space for the .wav files themselves.

Once this is done you are ready to extract your music.

(The included readme with the program is pretty complicated, basically you just need to put the CD in the drive, choose the drive number by typing a / and the number your drive is associated with and it does the work for you)

  • First insert your CD into your drive.
  • Second run the turborip program
  • Third select the CD drive where your Ys game is currently in. This will probably be the /1 option. So type /1 (or whatever number corresponds to the drive Ys is in) Hit enter
  • Fourth you now have all the .wav files from your TG-16 game!

.

You should now have a folder called Ys Book I & II (U) in the directory with the turborip program.
Inside this directory you should see the music files and some toc and cue files.
The next step is to get these .wav files into your Ys music folder as .ogg files which is covered in another section.
II. I have the soundtracks already how do I replace the music then?
If you already have the music it's very simple!

Just follow the .ogg conversion section and the file rename section.
(If you followed my guide for Ys 1 skip this section and go right to section III)

Just convert your MP3s (or wavs, or mp4s or whatever) of the following tracks to .ogg:

  • Ruins of Moondoria
  • Noble District of Toal
  • Cavern of Rasteenie
  • Ice Ridge of Noltia
  • Moat of Burnedbless
  • Palace of Solomon
  • Subterranean Canal
  • Campanile of Lane
  • Don't Go so Smoothly!
  • Termination
  • Stay With Me Forever

III. Converting your music files to .ogg format
Now that you have your .wav files the next step is to convert the files into a format that Ys 2 on steam will recognize. The game requires the files to be .ogg files to work.

To do this you'll need to convert the .wav files into .ogg.

The easiest way to do this is to download a free open source program called Audacity. This is a very powerful sound editor that is comparable in a lot of ways to professional sound tools.
(This isn't the only program that can do this, but it's free, powerful, and easy to use)

You can download the program from here:
Audacity on Sourceforge[audacity.sourceforge.net]

Once you've downloaded and installed Audacity you'll need to run it and use file > open and browse to where you have the .wav files you just ripped.

(remember the .wav files are located inside of the Ys Book I & II (U) folder that was created from ripping your CD)

First select 08 Ys Book I & II (U).wav (I've detailed below why we start with 8 and why we aren't converting all of the files)

Second You'll get a warning about the importing of the file. It asks you whether you want to make a copy of any file that you import in case you mess up. It's probably safest to say to make a copy that way you don't have to rip your CD again if you mess something up.

Third Once you have loaded 08 Ys Book I & II (U).wav you are now ready to save it as an .ogg file. Go to File > Export and save as a .ogg file.

Now you are only going to convert some of the .wav files.
The reason you are only converting some of the files is that many of the files on the CD are either cutscene dialogue, Ys 1 music files or the warning audio off of the CD.

Repeat the export process for each of the files that need to be converted

Thus we only need to convert a few files.

The files that need to be converted are as follows:

  • 08 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 09 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 10 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 11 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 12 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 13 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 14 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 15 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 16 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 20 Ys Book I & II (U).wav
  • 26 Ys Book I & II (U).wav

Once you have completed this process you can go to the next section.
There I detail how to move the files over to the Ys folder and what files need to be replaced of the original PC-88 music.
IV. Renaming the .oggs, moving and replacing the PC-88 music
We are at the last steps of the process.
(Additionally I listed at the bottom of this section what each replaced music file is called in case you have different music versions such as an OST or the arranged CD and you want to use those tracks instead.)

First you need to navigate to your steam folder that Ys 2 music files are located.

The default location is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Ys I\release\music

You will see a folder called music. You should make a copy of this folder in case you ever want to revert back to the original sound files.

Now you want to navigate to the folder that you have all of your .oggs in from the previous section.

You should see files named as such:

  • 08 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 09 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 10 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 11 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 12 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 13 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 14 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 15 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 16 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 20 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg
  • 26 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg

These files need to be renamed to the following:

  • 08 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_07ys2.ogg
  • 09 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_08ys2.ogg
  • 10 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_10ys2.ogg
  • 11 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_12ys2.ogg
  • 12 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_14ys2.ogg
  • 13 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_16ys2.ogg
  • 14 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_17ys2.ogg
  • 15 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_18ys2.ogg
  • 16 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_20ys2.ogg
  • 20 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_22ys2.ogg
  • 26 Ys Book I & II (U).ogg RENAME TO p_24ys2.ogg

Now take these renamed files and copy them into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Ys I\release\music folder.

.

When you are prompted to overwrite, say yes.

You have now replaced all of the PC-88 files with the ones that were in the TG-16 version.

To hear the TG-16 tracks just make sure that in the Ys options for the audio option you choose PC-88.

Please note that the TG-16 version didn't redo all of the PC-88 music. However you now have all of the tracks that WERE redone for the TG-16.

Here is a list of the files that you replaced and their names in case you want to use different versions of the the Ys 2 soundtrack, such as remixes or different OSTs

  • p_07ys2.ogg Ruins of Moondoria
  • p_08ys2.ogg Noble District of Toal
  • p_10ys2.ogg Cavern of Rasteenie
  • p_12ys2.ogg Ice Ridge of Noltia
  • p_14ys2.ogg Moat of Burnedbless
  • p_16ys2.ogg Palace of Solomon
  • p_17ys2.ogg Subterranean Canal
  • p_18ys2.ogg Campanile of Lane
  • p_20ys2.ogg Don't Go so Smoothly!
  • p_22ys2.ogg Termination
  • p_24ys2.ogg Stay With Me Forever
V. I don't want to replace PC-88, how do I replace the Plus or Complete mixes instead?
Let's say you don't want to replace the PC-88 music files.
It's pretty easy to replace the other files in the same fashion and leave the PC-88 files alone.

Below I have detailed which files you would replace and rename your oggs.

Ys Plus
  • o_07ys2.ogg Ruins of Moondoria
  • o_08ys2.ogg Noble District of Toal
  • o_10ys2.ogg Cavern of Rasteenie
  • o_12ys2.ogg Ice Ridge of Noltia
  • o_14ys2.ogg Moat of Burnedbless
  • o_16ys2.ogg Palace of Solomon
  • o_17ys2.ogg Subterranean Canal
  • o_18ys2.ogg Campanile of Lane
  • o_20ys2.ogg Don't Go so Smoothly!
  • o_22ys2.ogg Termination
  • o_24ys2.ogg Stay With Me Forever

Ys Complete
  • 07ys201.ogg Ruins of Moondoria
  • 08ys220.ogg Noble District of Toal
  • 10ys241.ogg Cavern of Rasteenie
  • 12ys242.ogg Ice Ridge of Noltia
  • 14ys243.ogg Moat of Burnedbless
  • 16ys240.ogg Palace of Solomon
  • 17ys233.ogg Subterranean Canal
  • 18ys245.ogg Campanile of Lane
  • 20ys235.ogg Don't Go so Smoothly!
  • 22ys246.ogg Termination
  • 24ys207.ogg Stay With Me Forever

VI. What if I want to replace every song in the soundtrack?
If you want to do that you need a full list of each music file and their relevant file names.
You need the file names if you want to match them to one of the MANY arrangements that exist out there for Ys 2.
Luckily I did that work for you already!

Note that if you followed the guide so far all of the TG-16 CD files were already replaced. This following process is only useful if you have other music files that you'd like to put here instead.

Want to play Ys with Arranged music, Rap, Techno, Final Fantasy Music, Heavy Metal, your own band's cover of Ys music?

Just replace the files below with anything you want to completely customize your soundtrack!

Great guide, I really do miss the old TG-16 console sounds.

Good guide, man. There's another thing you can add to this though. It's also possible to have the TG-16 version of "To Make the End of Battle" playing during the opening cinematic. You just have to edit the corresponding video file in the release folder. I managed to do it via movie maker and some really basic methods which shouldn't have worked, but it ended up working flawlessly.
