the recent concept for a contemporary interior is indeed trash, but the exterior (the roof, all the destroyed parts of it) are to be as they were before destruction. if it were an exhibit externally to the notre dame (similar to the original controversy of the pyramid outside the louvre) but agreed, defacing the interior in this fashion is a poor decision. but, the backlash to it has been very vocal, so its quite possible that the remodel could be cancelled.

from what I understand, the Notre Dame de Paris is to be reconstructed to be exactly as it was before it burnt down, with some new exhibits inside.
