How to change driving direction - left side or right side - in new and save games
By leftbehind
You can set the direction when creating new game, but you can also change existing games too.

Some terminology:
  • LHT = Left hand traffic (vehicles drive on left)
  • RHT = Right hand traffic (vehicles drive on right)
  • LHD = Left hand driver (driver sits on the left, usually for RHT)
  • RHD = Right hand driver (driver sits on the right, usually for LHT)

When creating a new game
Updated: February 2020
Traffic defaults to driving on the right.

For new cities
When you are creating a new game (the screen where you choose map or scenario), there's a small option under the map image that lets you switch to driving on the left.

For existing cities
If you want to change traffic direction for an existing city, it's a bit more complex - follow the next 3 sections of this guide...
1. Install these mods
2. Changing the direction
Updated: April 2020
Important:
If you use Traffic Manager: President Edition to customise your roads, all of those customisations will freak out when you change the road direction in-game. Make sure you remove any lane connections before changing direction, and check everything over after the direction is changed

Follow these steps:
  1. Load your city
  2. Leave the game paused during this process
  3. Open the scene explorer (Ctrl+E) in Mod Tools
  4. Find "SimulationManager"
  5. Look for "m_metaData" and set the "m_invertTraffic" field to:
    • 'true' for driving on the left (LHT / RHD)
    • 'false' for driving on the right (RHT / LHD)
  6. Save the game (under new file name)
  7. Exit to desktop
3. Clearing up the mess
Updated: February 2020
A sudden change in traffic direction confuses the game - a lot! So we need to clear up the mess.

Follow these steps:
  1. Relaunch the game, and go to the main menu ("Play" option from the Paradox Launcher app)
  2. Choose: Content Manager > Mods
  3. Find "Loading Screen Mod" and click the "Options" button
  4. Enable all "Safe Mode" options (this will clear down all traffic, solving most of the problems)
  5. Now re-load your save
  6. Leave the game paused during this process
  7. Press Ctrl+Zero to open the Broken Nodes Detector tool
  8. Use each of the fetures on it to clear up any broken stuff
  9. Save the game (under new file name)
  10. Exit to desktop
  11. Relaunch the game and load your city
If it worked, your city should now be driving on the other side of the road!

Note: You can now remove the mods as they are no longer needed, although I'd suggest keeping Loading Screen Mod as it massively reduces RAM consumption and makes loading much faster.

You might need to check over any remaining transport lines (bus routes, etc) to check if they are working as expected; if they aren't just delete the lines and create new ones.

is it possible to change only a part of road from right hand to left hand driving?

Thanks so much for this! It worked perfectly for my save. However, any new road draw is LHT. Any way to fix this?

I also could not find the m_metaData property. It just doesn't show up when viewing SimulationManager in the scene graph explorer.

I did however manage to change to left-side traffic by running the line

SimulationManager.instance.m_metaData.m_invertTraffic = SimulationMetaData.MetaBool.True;

using the Mod Tools console which i got to from the Mod Tools menu (CTRL-Q).

:( too much mess ( I mean Mod is fine, but the game is not). Restart the new city, FYI I could not find a property called m_metaData (Regrets for selecting different direction at the first place :( )

Ctrl+e won't work for me, tried relaunching the game, I've enabled all mods etc. Nothing

@Darkangel I am unsure if you can do that or not, but changing my traffic from LHT to RHT using this guide did stop my buses from being invisible. You could try changing it back to LHT again afterwards, and tt might work, but it might not.

I don't suppose you could use this mod to initially get the buses seen on the right hand lanes so when i can see them i can then change to driving on LHT and they will still be seen? Or will they simply disappear visually because LHT has now taken over? Also why did CS only create Highways that wouldn't reverse to LHT on load like the rest of their roads? I want the bus land on the left side on the highway!

I just used TMPE and cleared the traffic once the game restarted .
