The weapon's parts were not strong enough to withstand fully-automatic fire and often the gun would break after just a few burst of full-auto. Thus the firing of the AVT-40 on full-auto was prohibited, and the production of the weapon ceased the following year of 1949.

Stalin did prefer semi-automatic more than full auto as he stated that each bullet counts.
