Upon arriving in the WWF in 1996, Mick Foley unleashed one of his most bizarre, erratic incarnations to date, the psychotic Mankind. Somewhat unhinged, wearing a mask of leather straps and spending his time in boiler rooms, Mankind adapted the Mandible Claw submission hold, invented by the Fugitive himself, Sam Sheppard.

Mankind feuded with the Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin, and teamed with his old associate Terry Funk, then operating in the WWF as Chainsaw Charlie. By 1998, Mankind changed his attire and shifted his persona yet again, adapting the pungent sock, Mr. Socko to assist with his Claw, taking part in a legendary Hell in a Cell match with the Undertaker, and in a moment that will live in wrestling history, became the WWF Champion, defeating The Rock on Raw, a move that helped WWF take the lead in the Monday Night Wars.
