The Basics of RTW Alexander
This is an old extension play of RTW where the factions are Alexander the Great and Persia.

You begin with two cities, Pella, the capital of Macedon, and Sparta.

You also begin with two generals, Alexander, and one of his great Macedonian Generals. Alexander is in Europe while his Macedonian counterpart is in Asia Minor. You have four fleets and some armies.

The key here is twofold. First, Alexander must secure the flank behind Pella by conquering the two cities to the rear of Pella. This must be done rapidly.

Second, the army in Asia Minor should proceed to conquer the first city as soon as possible so as to begin to build both fleets and armies in Asia Minor.

It's important to realize that if Alexander dies, you lose the game, so do not risk Alexander unless you have favorable odds. On the other hand, he nearly always wins.

You do not have siege weapons, so you have to wait out sieges.

The navel aspect of the game is important. You should pursue the same strategy as Alexander--proceed along the coast, and strangle the Persian navy by capuring all of their port cities, and building fleets to blockade them.

One minor note--take Sinope on the north of Asia Minor, as it is a port city. Remember, the object is to build fleets, and block out Persian fleets.

Once Alexander is free, he should come over to Asia Minor on a convoy and begin the coastal route by staying to the oceans until he has come around to Egypt and captured all the ports.

Once all the ports are sealed off, the Persian Navy is limited to what exists at sea, they cannot build further, and you can blockade them from any convoys.

At this juncture, you are in control of several port cities and have built up the towns and can recruit good units. It is time to turn inwards and towards Babylon and Susa.

Here it gets tricky. The geography of the game is such that you have to pursue a certain path. The mountains of Persian/Iran are such that there is only one path thru, and you may encounter heavy resistance.

One good idea so Alexander is not killed is to send other troops and generals ahead at all times to deliver the initial blow, with Alexander behind. This isn't what happened historically, but other generals are effective, and the greek fighting units are superior to the Persians at all turns.

Thus, if a battle is lost, it is not a catastrophe--rather, you come again with Alexander, and he finishes off the depleted forces.

This process can take some time, but you have 100 turns to conquer Persia.

Once you finish the task, there is a nice little graphic celebrating you as the conqueror of the world.

At this point you should cry and be sad, for like Alexander, you have no more worlds to conquer.

I think you want the RTW thread. there's no Carthage campaign in RTW Alexanader.

drift13 the Carthage campaign is easy. The Roman Empires are a harder but still managable campaign.

Just try and keep your armies placed on bridges as you march across asia minor and you almost can't take casualties no matter how big the battles are. No need for navy once you get everyone over. Honestly just leaving a garrison at Pella is enough to stall the barbs from taking it and their lands aren't worth the effort to conquer them. Once you get an influx of cash from looting the Persians you can build up units in Pella/ Sparta and secure the homeland afterwards.

well, i agree with drift13. i was just answering a question as to whether it was possible. i surely do not recommend it. i think the turn procession is fine as it is. also, the game is winnable as macedon without any help, money or assistance--my sons and i have won it many times when it first came out. the key is just sending parmenides out ahead, sealing off the ports, sealing off the rear, and then bringing in alexander to administer the coup de grace as you need. and, of course, building fleets.

look, guys, a competent enough general will breeze through this campaign, with little to stop them at all, other than lack of funds, which seems to plauge macedon fairly heavily. if you ever played any barb faction in the original, you know how to deal with money troubles.to boot, if you ever played the greeks, you already know how best to use a phalanx. when i first heard of this campaign i was told its the toughest of all of the rtw campaigns, including in barbarian invasion. to be honest, my carthogen campaign was significantly more difficult than this has been at any stage. point to this rant? altering the turn amounts, though possible, is far from necessary

or you could be a cheating bastard and do this: go to your game directory for alexander, edit export_descr_unit
then edit the units that are exclusive to macedon, one of the easiest ways to make units absurd is to increase their health stat.

the turn limit is not fixed: if you decrease by how much each turn is worth per year eg instead of 2 turns per year it could be 0.25 years per turn. Thus increasing the time limit dramatically ;) This can be done in the desc_strat in the campaign folders
