SERIOUSLY, BACK UP YOUR SAVE FILE
N++ is a video game that takes at least 500 and potentially thousands of hours to finish. Despite this, a few save file corruption bugs made it into the game that are nearly impossible to track down; this is primarily because the corruption is extremely rare but is likely to be encountered in the time it takes to finish the game. Players that have gone at it for over hundreds of hours have time and time again have lost their save data at random - which can be discouraging, to say the least.

This is what YOU can do about it to prevent it from affecting you:

1. Navigate to your save file directory. You will find a file named "nprofile".
  • PC: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Metanet\N++\nprofile
  • Mac: ~/Documents/Metanet/N++/nprofile
  • Linux/Steam Deck: ~/.local/share/Metanet/N++/nprofile
  • Proton: ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/230270/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/
    Documents/Metanet/N++/nprofile

2. Copy this file, and compress the copy. The save file's format creates an obscene amount of padding (in part to reserve space for userlevel data, as the game has a fixed savefile size), so doing this will reduce the file size from 67.235MiB (70,501,008 bytes) to less than a quarter of a megabyte. Place the file somewhere safe.

3. Repeat this any time you make significant progress.
♥♥♥♥, MY SAVE CORRUPTED
Here's what to do:

1. Without closing the game or accepting a save corruption dialog, go to your savefile directory and copy nprofile-old to somewhere safe. There is a chance that it may contain a working savefile, however the game overwrites saves on successes and deaths, and it also seems to do so under certain conditions (but seemingly not often...?) when closing the game. So, if you've closed the game just to read this guide, you're probably already too late. It might still work if you have, so try anyway.

2. Turn off Steam Cloud. Steam Cloud will attempt to replace any file you insert with your previous one for some reason, so if your file corrupts and you don't turn it off, placing a new file will just revert it back.

2b. (Optional) Delete your Steam Cloud save. You can navigate to "Profile" in the ingame menu and press R to delete your cloud save. This will simply allow you to turn it on again after you have replaced your file - although some reports have said that loading cloud saves across different platforms is likely to corrupt your game, so as a personal recommendation, keep it off anyway.

3. Delete nprofile in your save file location and replace it with nprofile-old. If that doesn't work, use your backed-up copy (uncompressing it). Do not delete your backed-up copy in this process, as you still want a backup, of course.

And that's it! Please spread the word if anyone you know plays this game. Also, save corruption has unfortunately been reported on other platforms, too. If you're reading this having experienced that, I don't know how to fix it, sorry.

Woah, how did that get that messed up? Fixed, you can just paste that into the bar at the top of File Explorer and it should work. %USERPROFILE% refers to C:/Users/<the relevant user profile>.
