---=== The Basics ===---
Notes and Changes
  • This guide is officially up to date for Update 119.
  • All bullets and explosives in the game have been re-tested to reflect changes made in Update 85 (re-tested for Update 110).
  • Bodyshots with all armor levels are now considered in the effectiveness of ammunition.
  • Lvl 4 armor now represents Operator armor instead of Tomb Gladiator/Bone-er armor.
  • The firearm used for testing is now included with the results.
  • The guide has been reformatted (a few times) since its creation to be more intuitive.
Ammo Formatting
  • Type of ammunition
  • Rated level of penetration
    • Lvl 0 cannot defeat any armor type.
    • Lvl 1 can penetrate light armor.
    • Lvl 2 can penetrate medium armor, helmets, and bags.
    • Lvl 3 can penetrate heavy metal armor and face shields.
    • Lvl 4 can penetrate Operator (aka NVG) armor. This is the rarest armor type.
  • Head = Shots to kill on the unarmored head.
    • < 1 represents how many potential headshots it takes to kill a Sosig.
    • 1+ means it only takes 1 shot to explode the head.
  • Body Lvl 0 -> 3 = Shots to kill on the torso, armored according the the Body Lvl.
    • < 1 represents how many potential bodyshots it takes to kill a Sosig.
    • 1+ means it only takes 1 shot to explode the torso.
  • Properties or functions of the ammo type

    • Anti-Sosig means the explosive is capable of killing a Sosig in 1 shot.
    • Anti-Gladiator means the explosive can kill a Tomb Gladiator in 2 shots or less.
    • Anti-Lumberjack means the explosive can kill a Red Lumberjack in 2 shots or less.
  • Properties or functions of the explosive type

Other Information
  • Barrel length WILL effect shots to kill and penetration. Testing is done with either the most common or sensible barrel lengths for the ammo, so results may vary.
  • Testing is done at point blank range at the dead center of the link.
  • Bleeding is accounted for in potential shots to kill.
  • Clothing is not classified as armor.
  • Some ammo types have different names or spelling throughout the menus and spawners.
  • Testing is typically done on disabled AI.
  • Some special enemies have immunities or custom health (usually boss type Sosigs), which can potentially change a bullet's effectiveness.
  • No testing has been done on legacy enemies.

.22 Long Rifle
The most popular cartridge in the world, renowned for being light weight, quiet, and cheap; ideal for target shooting, weapons training, and small-game hunting. It's also one of the only rimfire cartridges with any sort of modern relevancy.

Notes: The best Tiny cartridge (with HVHP). It should be strongly noted that in pistols, this cartridge performs dramatically worse, increasing the body shot requirement by as much as 6x and the headshot requirement by 2x (with the exception of HVHP, which only increases the required bodyshots by 2x).
.22 Short
The father of the .22 caliber cartridges, including .22 Long and .22 LR, created in 1857 as a self defense cartridge, but also used for target shooting and shooting gallery games.

.41 Volcanic
Rocket Ball: An early form of self-contained ammunition, used by the Volcanic lever-action pistol. Though it was a revolutionary design for its time, it was plagued with multiple problems, such as the ammunition not sealing the gas in the action, due to its caseless design. However, both the ammunition and gun itself would lay the groundwork for future firearms technology.

Also known as "7.65mm Browning", This cartridge probably saw the biggest fall from grace of all, being one of the most popular pistol cartridges in the world throughout the 20th century. Today, it's been dethroned by 9x19mm, but it still enjoys a niche following, primarily in Europe. It was even the cartridge of choice for 007 himself.

.40 S&W
A law enforcement cartridge commissioned by the FBI, who asked Smith & Wesson to create a handgun that would allow them to shoot a reduced-velocity load of 10mm Auto. They in turn created .40 S&W, which met the FBI's specifications in a package small enough to retrofit into a 9x19mm handgun. It was phased out of service in many departments due to reports of allegedly unreliable ammunition and the ballistics being too similar to 9x19mm to justify its use, though it still enjoys a small cult following today.

.44-40 Winchester
Arguably one of the most popular cartridges of the Wild West era of America, .44-40 was originally chambered for the Winchester 1873 when it first began production, and as "the gun that won the West" grew in popularity, so too did the cartridge it fired, being used by frontiersman, cowboys, and law enforcement. It was only around the 1940s where the cartridge truly fell out of favor for more modern alternatives, though some cowboy competition shooters still make use of the cartridge.

7.62x25mm Tokarev
Almost an identical cartridge to 7.63x25mm Mauser, with the only significant difference being that 7.62x25mm Tokarev has a higher pressure. Allegedly, the changes are so minor that 7.63x25mm Mauser can be safely loaded, chambered, and fired through any 7.62x25mm Tokarev chambered firearm.

7.62x41mm SP-4

.30 Carbine
Technically one of the first PDW cartridges ever designed (depending on who you asked), as well as one of the first intermediate cartridges, intended to bridge the gap between the size of .45 ACP and the power of .30-06. .300 Blackout
Usually abbreviated to ".300 BLK", it was designed to be a more efficient subsonic cartridge than 5.56x45mm. By retaining the same general dimensions as 5.56x45mm, it allowed .300 Blackout to be chambered in guns designed for the aforementioned cartridge, with only minor modifications. By increasing the bullet's weight to slow the speed of the bullet, the cartridge achieves a more efficient subsonic performance, carrying more kinetic energy than a bullet with similar speeds, but lighter weight.

5.7x28mm NATO
The NATO standard PDW cartridge, created during the NATO PDW trials of 1999, used by the P90 and Five-seveN to compete with the MP7 and its 4.6x30mm cartridge. It would come out on top for its superior performance and innovative design. However, the Germans would veto its adoption, and NATO would delay their standardization on a PDW cartridge, finally being accepted over 20 years later.

7.62x39mm
Sometimes referred to as just "7.62" in the states, and most well known as the cartridge of the infamous AK-47, 7.62x39mm was created by the Soviets after seeing the effectiveness of the German's 7.92x33mm intermediate cartridge during WWII.

9x39mm
7.62x39mm casings necked up for 9mm bullets, created by the Russians to achieve subsonic velocities without sacrificing penetration power, with the basic idea being a heavier bullet will reduce the velocity without compromising its force, like reducing the velocity of the comparably light 7.62mm bullet would.

Not to be confused with 7.62x51mm NATO, as they are technically different cartridges. For the civilian market, the cartridge difference is negligible, as civilian hunting rifles are typically chambered for .308 Winchester, which can be safely fire 7.62x51mm NATO, but the reverse is not true.

7.62x51mm NATO
Usually abbreviated to "7.62 NATO", it is the NATO standard rifle cartridge, and the byproduct of America's insistence on "nothing lower than a .30 caliber" for a standardized rifle round. As a result of its adoption, the experimental .280 British intermediate cartridge was abandoned in favor of the cut-down .30-06 cartridge we know as 7.62x51mm. Though it would be replaced 13 years later by 5.56x45mm for standard infantry rifles, the cartridge would remain relevant as a median between 5.56x45mm and .50 BMG in marksman rifles and machine guns.

Notes: The fire rate of the Minigun negates any need to know the damage each bullet is doing. Shoot it till it dies. Ammo conservation is a pipe dream.

Notes: Better than 13x59mm Ogden as a cartridge.
Micro Rockets
Meat Fortress ordnance cartridge for the BarrageBox. Deviating from the standard, this cartridge is tested at the range where the rocket accelerates. More details in the notes section.

Anti-Sosig
Fires a standard explosive that accelerates after some distance.
Tested with the BarrageBox.

Notes: Although the gun will always fire 4 of the given ammunition loaded, this cartridge is abysmal for most scenarios. The range required for the cartridge to accelerate is the size of a small room, the explosive itself isn't powerful enough to kill a Sosig unless it accelerates and hits it directly, and worst of all is the slug's damage when it doesn't accelerate. At point blank range, I tested the shots required to kill to be 85 for the head, and a whopping 402 for the body! This cartridge is non-lethal if you're too close to the target. Wouldn't recommend.

Greater push and higher explosive yield compared to Frag with the downside of being effectively non-lethal.
Canned Meat
Anti-Gladiator
Fires a shrapnel explosive, incapable of rocket jumping.
Rocket Pop
Non-Lethal
Applies "Freezing" debuff (slows enemy and makes them weak to blunt damage).
Tested with the Rocket Launcher.

Notes: Hope you don't get motion sickness.

Causes enemies to attack allies.
Tested with the Syringe Gun.

Notes: I do not care to test further if Knockout or Rage can eventually kill a target. Each time I test it, it's a different result since half the syringes bounce off and it's always an absurd number. Never use this ammunition if you value your sanity.
---=== Thank You! ===---
I want to thank yall for all the attention this guide has received over the years. I never really expected for the guide to become this popular, but I've always taken pride in it. Without all the attention it garnered, I probably would've never finished it. But as a thank you, I will continue to update it as much as I can for as long as I can.

I have no real idea. I did a lot of reformatting and retesting, so it's hard to say for sure at this point. If I had started from scratch, I'm sure it would've been much faster though.
