1. Story - How the West was solved


Freddi and Luther go to Calico Ranch to meet Freddi's cousin, Calico Catfish, who agreed to teach them to raise hogfish. Cousin Calico tells them that her prized hogfish herd had been rustled. Freddi and Luther head into Briny Gulch. While investigating, Luther finds a note dropped by the rustlers. It mentions a meeting at the Rusty Rustler, a local shipwreck, at high tide. They try to enter the wreck, but are stopped by a rustler. Using the magazine advertisment the rustler gave them, Freddi and Luther then set out to find materials for making rustler disguises.
2. Minigames
The Nickelodeon:
Visit Saltwater Stella's sodaloon and click on the nickelodeon machine to see a variety of old-fashioned movie clips. Experience thrilling chases, surprise endings, and humorous escapades! To scroll through choices, click the up/down arrows on the left. To see a movie, click "play" or click on the movie screen. To exit the nickelodeon, move your cursor to the upper-right corner of the screen and click the big arrow.

Wanted Poster:
Create your own outlaws with the Interactive Wanted Poster! You can describe your outlaws' wacky crimes by scrolling through descriptive words and names. Make a Wanted Poster (in grayscale or color) for your room by clicking the Print icon. (Note: Printing is unavailable in ScummVM games)

Oysteroid Arcade:
Once you've met "U," you can visit the Oysteroid Arcade where bubbles are full of troubles! Aim the clam with your mouse, then click the mouse to split a bubble with a pearl. If you split a bubble enough, you can pop it and it will disappear. But watch out, if a bubble touches the clam, it's doomsday for that clam! Fortunately, Briny Gulch clams have three lives. (You can even get an extra clam life for every 500 points you score.) As you progress, you'll have to split more bubbles. You can play the Oysteroid Arcade as much as you want. To exit the game, click on the QUIT bubble.

There are 3 things you need to do in order to save the Hogfish & save Calico's Ranch.

There are some In-Game Locations that my catch your fancy under the sea.

5. Differences in the Storyline
The Combination to the Rustler's Hideout is different each time played.

The Rustler's 10 Gallon Hat is a different colour each time played (Blue, Orange, or Purple, never White).

The alphabetical letter on the Belt Buckle is different each time you play. (The Letters being "L", "K" or "S")

The Rustlers will either have a Bow tie or a Bandana each time you play.
From the shipwreck, if it's a Bow tie, then Freddi and Luther obtain a small shaker which they must obtain a can of pepper from, whilst if it's a Bandana, they obtain an Air Pump.

The can of pepper is used to remove a blowfish guarding a mine (which only appears when obtaining the bow tie) where Freddi and Luther will find a Harmonica, while the air pump is used to inflate a buoy atop a Suitcase, located near the cave with the Jellyfish, both of which can be traded in for either the bow tie or bandana.

Sheriff Shrimp appears at a different location and scenario on each playthrough. He'll either by hiding ashamed under a 10 Gallon Hat in one version near the spot with Gill Barker, or he'll be tied to a rudder in the other near the spot with U the Mail Snail.

Obtaining the 10 Gallon Hat can either be from flossing it out from Fluke the Whale's teeth with the string obtained from rescuing Sheriff Shrimp (she also only appears in that version), or by giving Sheriff Shrimp his Starfish found in a Cave guarded by a Hungry Shark (which only appears in that version of the game in place of the rudder).

The Shape of the Wheel Nut used to fix U the Mail Snail's Cart is different each playthrough. (It is either one of the following shapes: Hexagon, Square, Circle or Triangle)

The Person that turns out to be Mr. Big is different each time played, each having a different reasoning, and similar to how it's done in Freddi Fish 3 you are able to choose who is the main culprit of the case however unlike in Freddi Fish 3, you are only able to choose only one of 4 out of 13 characters the other 9 are put in for no reason.
6-1. Walkthrough Guide - Calico's Ranch
When you start the game, you'll start a few feet away from Calico's Ranch, head up twice until you reach Calico's Ranch & you'll learn that her Hogfish has been Rustled. Luther asks what Rustled means and its old western term for stealing & a hogfish requires care, even the Sheriff is out of town. Freddi & Luther agree to help Calico out. Head to the right until you find a Purple Sea Urchin, pick it up for later then head left again until you reach the town of Briny Gulch.
6-2. Walkthrough Guide - Welcome to Briny Gulch
Once you arrive at the town of Briny Gulch, head over to Just Buckles and you'll that Nelson is working on something other than a belt buckle (Remember this, because it could come up again later), then examine the blueprint for the belt buckle & barbell.

After that, head to Saltwater Stella's saloon. Be sure to talk to 8-Finger Phil about the Rustlers (Remember what 8-Finger Phil is playing on the piano, it could come up again later). Next pick up the note which has the combination code to enter the Rusty Rustler that's randomized for each walkthrough. That note will be added to your inventory for later. Next talk to Saltwater Stella about the Rustlers. When you're done talking to Stella, exit the saloon & a cutscene will play that has 8-Finger Phil calling Mr. Big about the note.
= 8-Finger Phil Clue 1
Mysteriousness: After Freddi and Luther leave the Bar after they collect the combination to the Rustler's Hideout, Phil stops playing his piano and makes a phone call about a note.

I forgot to mention, about the Mr. Big Cutscenes, DO NOT skip them if you can, otherwise, you'll miss out on the clues to who Mr. Big is.

If you try to go up, you'll see the road is closed, so head right until you reach the Rusty Rustlers. Once at the Front Door of the Rusty Rustlers, enter the code to open the door. Then talk to the Rustler, then he'll tell you what to do in order be a Rustler: You need to look like one. You get a checklist of what you need to find in order to look like a Rustler as the outfit is randomized for each walkthrough. After you leave the Rusty Rustler, you'll watch another cutscene.
= Mr. Big Clue 1
The Rustlers threaten the Hogfish to quiet down or they'll call Mr. Big.

After these Cutsences, head up from Briny Gulch's town Square to continue.

6-3. Walkthrough Guide - Belt Buckle
When you reach the Center Stage, talk to the foremen about the stage, and they'll need an actual square floor to complete the project, the wood they'll ask you for is randomized for each walkthrough. Head north, followed by a right until you reach the wood, then pick up the next Purple Sea Urchin along with the wood that's the correct size then return to the stage with the correct piece of wood, then use the Correct wood piece on the Dance floor & you'll get the screwdriver from them. You may also get a Cutscene showing you another clue who Mr. Big is.
= Sahara Slim Clue 1
Mysteriousness: After Freddi and Luther collect a piece of wood to give to the Construction Workers, he appears asking a telegram fish to deliver a certain urgent message signed "You Know Who".

Next, head over to Gill Barker's shop in which he's selling a package of Gum & Wheel Nuts (more on that later), head left until you reach a crossing. From the crossing, continue left then go up until you reach the jellyfish cave, wait until the Jellyfish are lowered then continue left until you find a crank handle & your 3rd Purple Sea Urchin, get those items because you'll need them, then backtrack to the center stage, then head up, right, then up until you reach the sunken ship, head downright until you reach a sunken sail, use the crank handle on the sail. Once the crank handle is on the sail, turn the handle to raise the water level and backtrack to sunken ship and head inside. Once inside, you'll find the 4th Purple Sea Urchin, pick it up, then head through the doorway. You'll find a spice container/tire pump, pick it up, then look at the letters on the crate (if one of the letters matches the one on the Rustler Fish Page, then pick it up using the screwdriver. If not, then there is another way to getting the correct letter). Use the spice container to fill it with Pepper, then exit the ship for another cutscene.
= Mr. Big Clue 2
The Rustlers try to get the Hogfish to eat cake.

Backtrack to the Crossing then head up until you see a blowfish blocking the enterance to the Kelp Mine, use the Spice Container filled with pepper and he'll move aside. Enter the Kelp Mine and you'll find a Harmonica, pick that up, then you'll see 4 more Letters spelling K-E-L-P (again, if one of the letters matches the one on the Rustler Fish Page, then pick it up using the screwdriver. If not, you'll have to return to the sunken ship to find the correct letter), once you have the correct letter, you'll need the Frame for the belt buckle. Backtrack to where Sahara Slim then up, right & right again & you'll notice the Mail Carrier has a problem. The Wheel on the carrier has fallen off and needs a new nut to hold onto the wagon. The Wheel Nut's Slot for the Mail Carrier is Randomized for each Walkthrough. Backtrack then head north until you see the 5th & Last Purple Sea Urchin, pick it up then head to Gill Barker's shop & talk to him. This time, he's selling Wheel Nuts & Bubble Gum. Pay him the 3 Purple Sea Urchins to buy a wheel nut that matches the correct one on the Wheel Nut Slot on the Mail Carrier. After that, pay him 2 Purple Sea Urchins for the Bubble Gum & examine the IOU that's on the floor (Remember this because it could come up again). Once you have the Wheel Nut, return to the Mail Carrier & You'll watch another cutscene showing a Clue on who Mr. Big is.
= Gill Barker Clue 1
Mysteriousness: He drops his IOU which he tells Freddi and Luther is a poem after they read it. After patronizing, he is suspiciously confronted by a dark green tuna wearing sunglasses.
Note: Friendly Reminder to Gill Baker = You owe Shady Sharp 20 Clams. Pay up pronto.

Once you're back at the Mail Carrier, use the Wheel Nut on the Mail Carrier's Wheel & the wagon will be fixed then Luther will mention glue to Elmer which scares him, causing E. Tippet's Mailbox door to fall once the Wagon crashes into it and he'll get his package. Then pick up the old Mailbox door and you'll have your Belt Buckle Frame. Backtrack to Briny Gulch and give both the Belt Buckle Letter & Mailbox to Nelson, then he'll make you the Belt Buckle. Once you have the Belt Buckle, you'll need two more items for Rustler Disguise: The 10-Gallon Hat & Bandana or Bowtie. Once you exit the Just Buckles shop, you'll see another cutscene.

The Rustlers hire sheep to jump over the fence to get the Hogfish to sleep while counting them.

6-4. Walkthrough Guide - Bowtie/Bandana
= Bowtie Route
If you picked up the Harmonica from the Kelp Mine, head over to where Sahara Slim & give him the Harmonica. Then you'll get his bowtie from him. Once you have the Bowtie, you'll need one more item to complete the Rustler Disguise: The 10-Gallon Hat. Head out to find the 10-Gallon Hat next and you'll see another Cutscene.
= Mr. Big Clue 3
The Rustlers can't take the Hogfish as their driving them nuts.

= Bandana Route
If you picked up the Tire Pump from the Sunken Ship, head over to the Jellyfish Cave and you'll find a buoy floating there & its holding a suitcase down. Use the tire pump on the buoy & you'll be able to get the suitcase. Once you have the suitcase, head over to where Sahara Sam is & give him the suitcase, then you'll get the Bandana from him. Once you have the Bandana, you'll need one more item to complete the Rustler Disguise: The 10-Gallon Hat. Head out to find the 10-Gallon Hat next and you'll see another Cutscene.
= Mr. Big Clue 3
The Rustlers can't take the Hogfish as their driving them nuts.
6-5. Walkthrough Guide - 10-Gallon Hat
= Starfish Route
Head back to where the crossing is and you'll see a 10-Gallon Hat in the middle & examine it. Shrimp is hiding under it and he's upset because he lost his starfish and won't give you the Hat until you find his badge (Example: You can't be a Sheriff without a Gold or in this case, Silver Star). Backtrack until you reach the area near the Mail Carrier then head up & you'll encounter a shark. Use the Bubble Gum on the Shark. Then, enter the Shark Cave and you'll find 4 starfish. The correct Starfish is Randomized in each walkthrough. Once you have the Correct Starfish, return to where Shrimp is and give him the starfish and you'll the 10-Gallon Hat from him. Head back to Saltwater Stellar's Saloon to give the 10-Gallon Hat the correct color & another cutscene will happen.
= Mr. Big Clue 4
The Rustlers will confess about being Hogfish Rustlers but have no idea how to do so.

When you return to Saltwater Stella's Saloon, look at the Rustler Outfit page again and you'll see that your 10-Gallon Hat must match the color shown on the page. Talk to Perry, Apricot or Orchid to change the color of the spittoon. Once the Spittoon is the correct color, use the 10-Gallon Hat on it to get the 10-Gallon Hat that color. Now you have the complete Rustler Disguise but before heading to the Rusty Rustlers. But before doing so, enter the saloon for another clue on who Mr. Big is.
= 8-Finger Phil Clue 2
Mysteriousness: Later, if Freddi and Luther re-enter the Bar (after they've obtained the 10 Gallon Hat and dyed it), he can be seen asking the person at the other side if he tried playing This Little Piggy.

Possible Starfish (Randomized per playthrough, but only 2 are the correct ones):
1. Silver
2. Blue

= Whale Route
From the Crossing where the Mail Carrier is, head up until you find Shrimp caught in a propeller. Enter the ship, look at the color on the center of the ship's wheel and turn the Speed handle on the speed settings so that's its the correct color & the propeller stops rotating. Then untie Shrimp from the Floss. Pick up the Floss, then head to where the Wood is. From there, go left until you see a whale named Fluke, who's got something caught in her teeth which is a 10-Gallon Hat. Use the Floss to get the Hat out of her Teeth & you'll get the 10-Gallon Hat. Head back to Saltwater Stellar's Saloon to give the 10-Gallon Hat the correct color & another cutscene will happen.
= Mr. Big Clue 4
The Rustlers will confess about being Hogfish Rustlers but have no idea how to do so.

When you return to Saltwater Stella's Saloon, look at the Rustler Outfit page again and you'll see that your 10-Gallon Hat must match the color shown on the page. 6-6. Walkthrough Guide - Rusty Rustlers
Now that you have the Complete Hogfish Disguise, return to the Rusty Rustlers & use the 3 Key Items (10-Gallon Hat, Belt Buckle & Bandana/Bowtie) on Freddi Fish & she'll put the disguise on, then enter the Ruster Rustlers. The Rustlers will think that Mr. Big sent the new Rustler to help with the Hogfish. After you enter the Rusty Rustlers, you'll end up captured right away.

Examine the hatch, but its blocked by cannonballs. Remove the cannonballs & you'll be able to open the hatch. Then you'll run into the Missing Hogfish but first, examine the item in the room to get a clue on who Mr. Big is. That item is linked to Mr. Big's identity (This will be covered in the Witness & Evidence section). Exit the room using the hole & you'll be outside the Rusty Rustlers. Head left until you see a hook behind a Rudder. Nothing we can do for now, so head up to the bridge & use the ship wheel to move the rudder so you can get the hook. Once you have the hook, pick it up then bring it to the anchor. Attach the hook to the anchor & place it on the Hogfish's cell window, then lower the anchor to free the hogfish.

Once the Hogfish are freed, Freddi will explain that Mr. Big is involved in the Rustling as well & is about to unmask Mr. Big's Identity. DO NOT skip this cutscene when unmasking Mr. Big.

Mr. Big's Identity is randomly determined, each time you play the game, so look at the Item in the room with the hogfish:
If the evidence is a barbell, Nelson Torso is Mr. Big
If the evidence is a piece of sheet music with the lyrics to "This Little Piggy", 8-Finger Phil is Mr. Big
If the evidence is a Block of Ice with a Telegram, Sahara Slim is Mr. Big
If the evidence is a Hogfish can be seen chewing gum, Gill Barker is Mr. Big.

Select the right culprit, and the game will end with the Hogfish back at Calico's Ranch with the Rustlers & Mr. Big being appropriately sentenced to Community Service. And as a reward for saving Calico's Ranch, Freddi & Luther will receive 10-Gallon Hats, then be thought how to tie a lasso.

Secret Note: It says; "Meet at the Rusty Rustler at High Tide. Memorize the Combination & then eat this note." The Combination shown on this note is Randomized.

Spice Container: Used along with the Pepper to ward off the pufferfish.

Starfish: Used on Shrimp to get the 10-Gallon Hat from him. Make sure its the correct color before doing so. (Example: Sheriff Shrimp wears a Silver or Gold Star)

Suitcase: Used to get the Bandana from Sahara Sam.

Tire Pump: Used to inflate the buoy & get the suitcase.

Wheel Nut: Used to fix the Mail Wagon. Make sure its the correct wheel nut first.
9. Freddi's Computer
Freddi's Computer on the Inventory contains Game Options.

Save = Save your Game. A total of 8 Files can be saved at a time. Place the game's screenshot onto the file you want to save & name your Save File to save your progress. You can overwrite a save by placing its screenshot on the game you saved earlier & name it. This can be done anywhere in the game at anytime.

Load = Load a Saved Game. You can load your Saved game by selecting the screenshot you saved your progress in by clicking on it.

Then I'll show you how to do so.

First, download the ScummVM Emulator here:

Then, follow these steps:
1. Insert your Freddi Fish 4: Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch CD into your Disc Drive.
2. Click on QUIT at the autorun.
3. Open the CD
4. Create a new Folder on your C Drive and Name it: "HEGames".

5. Create a New Folder in your HEGames Folder & Name it "Freddi4"

6. Copy the Freddi Fish 4: Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch CD Files to your Freddi4 Folder on your Hard Drive.

7. Run the ScummVM Installer & follow the instructions shown.

8. DON'T Open Freddi Fish 4: Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch just yet. If you're using a newer computer, you'll need to use the ScummVM Emulator.

9. Open ScummVM
10. Select "ADD GAME"

11. Find the folder where Freddi Fish 4: Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch is Installed on your Hard Drive, select CHOOSE & then select OK. After that, the game should be added to the ScummVM Library.

12. Highlight Freddi Fish 4: Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch,
then Double-Click on it to start or select START.

12-3. Evidence & Witness Answer Key
NOTE: Be sure to save your game before solving the Final Puzzle. If you pick the incorrect witness, Mr. Big will make his/her escape & you won't get to see the True Ending, so be sure to reload your save using the ScummVM Options Menu to restart the game, access the Load Screen & try again if this happens. Do not skip the cutscene when Freddi mentions Mr. Big or you'll miss an important clue.

HINT: Be sure to examine the item that appears in the Room with the Hogfish in the Rusty Rustlers. 4 of the Witnesses are the Possible Identity of Mr. Big while the other 9 are put in for no reason.

Only 2 more Humongus Adventure games to go. I still need to do some research on Freddi Fish 5 and Pajama Sam 4 before I can make the walkthroughs.
