This reskin represents how DSG 3249 looked in the early 1980's.

DSG 3249 was part of a 24-strong class of shunters, all built in Japan by Toshiba. 3249 entered service in September 1983, and the first livery she carried was International Orange. All DSG's were outshopped in this livery when new. It wasn't until 1994 when 3249 was repainted in New Zealand Rail blue. This was right around the time when New Zealand began its 13 year long experimentation with rail privatisation.

The entire 24-strong DSG class was fitted with shunters' refuges in around 1997. Shunters' refuges are distinctive extensions to the locomotive frame, with big steps on each side. These are useful in shunting yards, allowing the driver to stand outside the cab yet still operate the locomotive by means of a remote control.

As far as I know, DSG 3249 has spent all of her life working in the North Island. She received Tranz Rail Blue around the same time when the shunters' refuges were added. In the early 2010's, I remember seeing a very scruffy 3249 at Mount Maunganui. It wasn't until June 2013 when the engine was repainted in the KiwiRail livery. Every single DSG now carries this livery as well.

Today 3249 is still going strong despite being 37 years old. On the day of uploading this reskin, DSG 3249 was on a shunting turn at Mount Maunganui.
