Randomizer is a popular Team fortress 2 plugin. It can be played on any map as a stand-alone mod or coupled with many other mods. Unlike most mods presented in this series, randomizer isn’t a full blown mod-gamemode. It’s a significantly game-changing mod but still follows the game’s standard rules and objectives.

The original first ever randomizer plugin was released March 2009. It’s since been abandoned. Randomizer was resurrected in September 2010 when the current public randomizer plugin was released. Its max popularity peaked in April 2012. Today there are roughly 15 randomizer server running either full, or part-time.

So what is randomizer?

At its core, randomizer is a set of game rules. The rules are simple; everyone spawns as a random class with a random load out. All weapons programmed into the game are available. Classes can wield any weapon, regardless of what class the weapon belongs to.

Every time a player spawns they become and random class and receive a random selection of weapons. When a player died they respawn as a new random class with a new random selection of weapons. The only exception to this is if the player dies to suicide or self-inflicted damage. If they killed themselves they keep their loadout. This is to discourage players from killing themselves in order to get a more preferable loadout. Weapon selection respects slot orientation. In other words: primary, secondary and melee weapons all exist in separate pools. So, regardless of the loadout possibilities, players will always receive 1 primary, 1 secondary and 1 melee.

Classes keep their specific attributes. Things like run-speed, health pool and the medic’s passive health regeneration aren’t random. This sometimes varies but usually the only exception is that the engineers ability to build buildings. Any classes can roll the ability to build. If they die they lose the ability and their buildings will be automatically destroyed.

Some aspects of randomizer don’t mesh well with TF2. Because classes were never meant to use weapons from other classes, bugs and visual glitches occur. Many classes don’t have animations to support many weapons. For example, only the sniper can look through a scope. This leads to often seeing players in their reference pose. Commonly referred to as the civilian pose, a class in their reference pose appears to glide around standing upright with their arms at their side. Another common problem with classes using weapons they aren’t supposed to is the view-model. The first person view can be glitchy in numerous ways. It ranges from appearing as though the class is holding a weapon incorrectly, to not seeing any arms or weapons at all to having the weapon obstruct 90% of the screen.

Randomizer is in a semi-constant state of development. It’s updated usually shortly after new weapons are added or modified in order to include the new weapons or modifications.

Besides all the standard weapons, randomizer also includes 7 custom made weapons. Because of the open nature of the mod, new custom weapons can be added and removed. Not many servers use this feature though. Some use custom models for these weapons.

One thing to note is how randomizer changes up the flow and balance of Team Fortress 2. TF2’s a game about counters. Randomizer throws all that out the window. What’s left is the opponent’s defence will always be random wile your offence will also always be random. Since everyone is subject to the same odds of getting an effective loadout, everything is completely balanced and fair in a weird way.

And that’s basically randomizer in a nutshell. A fun modification to TF2’s gameplay. A change of pace where any enemy could be a pushover, or a killing machine super overpowered hybrid healer.

the one thing i don't like about this guide is that it doesn't say what the 7 custom weapons are

Great video. The biggest complaint I hear, which is basically a flat out lie, is that randomizer isn't "compatible" or "balanced" for non-arena maps.
