Parkour Fortress is a popular Team fortress 2 mod-gamemode. It’s played on custom-made maps.

The Parkour Fortress plugin is correctly in development and isn’t available to the public. Because of this only 2 servers run this mod. Parkour Fortress was created Jun 2011 and has peaked at it’s maximum popularity July 2012.

So what is Parkour Fortress?

Parkour Fortress is a mod-gamemodes about scaling builds as fast as possible using wall runs, rebounds and other acrobatics.

Parkour Fortress at its core can be split into 2 categories. The main game of time trials to get to end of a map, repeatedly attempting to reduce mistakes and gain faster times. AND the more ambitious stuff involving flag retrieval, weapon pickups and player-vs-player.

In the time trial mode, the goal is simply to get to the end of the map as fast as possible. Players who’ve finished with the best times are listed on the left side of the screen for everyone to see. A timer at the top of the screen indicates how well the player is doing. Once they reach the end they are shown how well their time was compared to their best time. Most Parkour Fortress maps are time trial maps. In time trials mode clicking reload will instantly respawn the player back at the start of the map and reset the timer.

In the flag capture mode, the goal is to capture 2 or more briefcases. Once all briefcases are picked up by one of the teams all the players holding them must mean each other in order to win the round. Unlike time trials, this mode has player versus player combat. Players start off with only their fists. Running at maximum speed grates players critical hits with their fists. Scattered around the maps are 3 weapons: A pistol and a sniper rifle and a single-use grappling hook. Picking up one allows for its use until it runs out of ammo. Picking up weapons has a downside. Players with weapons can’t travel as fast. Weapons can be discarded with the call medic button.

To aid in the traversal of specially designed play-spaces, Parkour Fortress adds a sweet of moves and abilities for the player to perform. Players can run on walls by holding strafe, forward and jump at the same time. Players can do wall rebounds by holding jump, turning around and then jumping again. Players can grab ledges, scale short fences and obstacles, slide down zip lines and ascend pipes by holding down jump. Crouching wile moving performs a slid. Slides don’t decrease momentum if preformed on inclines. Crouching when falling from a large height and hitting the ground will perform a roll. Falling from a large height and not rolling will either kill or stun the player for a short time. Lastly a super jump leap can be preformed by using secondary fire wile at maximum speed. Doing so will drain speed on landing however.

One thing to note is the use of momentum in Parkour Fortress. Players start off at a stand still and gain momentum as they move. At maximum running speed a wind effect will appear and a sound effect will play. (Provided the client downloads custom files) The music playing in the background will also change once a player sustains a state of high momentum for a short time. The rhythm of the music changes to complement the sustained fast pace.

Parkour Fortress is based off of the 2008 videogame: Mirror's Edge. A game about using the power of wall-runs and climbing (also known as parkour) in order to avaid the police and reach checkpoints. Much of the look of buildings and other aesthetics within Parkour Fortress maps barrow heavily from this game.

And that’s basically Parkour Fortress in a nutshell. A fun momentum, reflex and efficiency based gamemode. A trial and error, simulation of a gameplay experience within another game.
